Grrrr! Brigance Development Scale and Weaning by
Circe
My daughter's teacher had given me a copy of the Brigance Inventory of Early
Childhood Development a while back and, out of curiosity, I was checking to
see where Vernon's progress was falling on the scale (his gross motor skills
seem about 6 months ahead to me, and I wanted to see if I was about...

End of an Era by
Circe
Well, it's done. I have officially left the ranks of breastfeeding moms: I
haven't nursed my youngest son (3y11m) since last Sunday morning. It wasn't
exactly a mutual decision--he asked me for "side sides" several times a day
for almost all of last week--but I think he's finally come around. I...

LJ wants to ban default breastfeeding pics by
[email protected]
LiveJournal has requested that a user change her default icon to one
not depicting her breastfeeding baby, because it is "inappropriate".
There's a lot of ongoing discussion on
http://community.livejournal.com/boob_nazis/1737571.html
Promom has a three-minute activist letter, to be sent to the...

18 Months and STILL going strong.. by
[email protected]
The question is, how do I help her???
Nurse her when she asks. :-) It's a spot of comfort in a confusing/
exciting/ overstimulating new situation and if she knows she *can*
nurse, that will relieve a source of pressure on her. Plus she'll get
the antibodies while she's getting exposed to all...

yikes; Pedialyte "substitute" by
[email protected]
So I know this very nice woman who wants the best for her daughter,
but is rather uneducated as to what that might be. Her DD is two
months younger than DS, so that makes her about 15 months old.
The mama does a lot of things I wouldn't be terribly comfortable
doing, like feeding her DD Froot...

heard my first negative bfing comment! by
[email protected]
A little background: DH was taking care of DS last week and took him
by Grandma and Grandpa's house for a bit. DS was cranky because it
was approaching bedtime but wouldn't fall asleep for his father
because he usually goes to sleep after a bath, stories, and a long
nursing session.
So yesterday...

Homeopathic remedy for infected toenail and Hale's question by
cjra
I got a shot of Rocephin, which appears to be safe for nursing moms,
but also a 'script for Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (bactrim). Lots of
sources say its contraindicated for BF, but kellymom says it's L3 -
'safe but risk is possible'. Does anyone have Hale's? I'm kind of
paranoid to take...

I got a comment about NIP this weekend by
cjra
We were in the middle of nowhere on a road trip (DD does NOT like
driving so this wasn't fun), and though I normally try to avoid petrol
stations when DD is with me, there wasn't much choice. She woke up and
screamed for nursing and I desperately had to pee, and the only place
was the petrol...

The problem with knowing too much - Pertussis by
cjra
I'm always paranoid.
Being an infectious disease epidemiologist and investigating all sorts
of diseases, now I'm panicked every time A sneezes!
Pertussis is a problem in our area. And my mom was here with a
persistent cough. When she left DD started coughing, but barely, and
has a stuffy nose. It's...

Oatmeal or is this my imagination? by
cjra
I'd read recently that eating oatmeal helps milk supply. So I've been
having oatmeal off and on, and wow! My boobs are about to explode. Is
this for real or is it just my imagination?
I know beer is supposed to work too but DD doesn't like beer :( gives
her gas. I do drink Mother's Milk tea daily,...

She's Perfect! by
cjra
I knew that, but it was nice to have it confirmed :)
We had our follow up appt yesterday with the developmental pedi. Given
the circumstances of A's birth and then heavy sedation, there was some
concern about loss of oxygen and potential developmental delay due to
sedation. The only obvious sign...

Co sleeping, colder temps, drafty house by
cjra
How warm do you keep your house?
How do you bundle up your kid?
DO you have any issues once you start using big duvets?
We live in South Texas, so it's not like we'll have subzero temps to
worry about, but it does get cold from time to time, and dips below
freezing. We do have central heat, but...

Pumping in public bathrooms? by
cjra
Am I the only one that things this is not reasonable?
Is this along the lines of people thinking one can nurse in a bathroom
stall?
Two people today suggested that in such a matter of fact way like why
was I concerned? There are bathrooms in that building... Neither of them
have ever BF'd or pumped...

Didn't realise pumping would be such a Pain! by
cjra
I pumped for 3 weeks while DD was in hospital so doing it is not a big
deal. And I work in an office, normal office hours with a door which
locks and a kitchen w/sink to wash things, so surely it should be no
problem. AND, I work for the health dept which is pushing a big BF
awareness campaign at...

Pump and dump? Aspirin by
cjra
I had a splitting headache at work, and not thinking took 2 aspirin
(not sure what size, really small pills ;-)), then remembered I wasn't
supposed to take aspirin while BF.
Is such a small amount significant? Should I pump and dump? If so, for
how long?

Is letting a baby sleep on your chest a big no-no? by
cjra
I've seen elsewhere people comment that they're 'bad parents' for
letting their baby sleep on their chest (I have asked there as well).
Is this like sleeping on the stomach and another SIDS risk?
DD *always* naps on my chest during the day. It's the only way to
assure a nap that's greater than 30...

Breastfeeders who pump and give a bottle when out? by
cjra
Is there anyone here who does this?
I just wonder how common it is. On another board, someone had suggested
to avoid offending people by NIP, they pump and give a bottle when
they're out. Of course I said this was ludicrous, heck, one of the joys
of BF is that my boobs are portable and always...

Leaking like Niagra Falls..... by
cjra
Is leaking something that eases with time as we sort out this
breastfeeding pattern? Or am I doomed to soaking through multiple pads
a day for the next couple of years?
Not the end of the world, but I hate wearing bras, esp. at night. I have
to though as I need something to hold the pads in else I...

Is she getting enough protein? by
cjra
We're not really vegetarians, but DH is strongly opposed to giving DD
meat now. I'm trying to figure out what foods to give her to include
protein. She's 10.5 months, on 3 solids meals per day (most days), but
she doesn't eat a ton. Our menu looks like this:
B'fast - museli OR semolina OR mixed...
