How much milk is my older baby getting? by
Cathy Weeks
Hi all,
My 20 month old is still going strong with nursing. But the older she
gets, the less milk I can get if I pump. I understand that this is
normal, that my body is just perfectly tuned to her needs at this
point.
Now, at this point, I only pump if I'm going to be gone from her all
day,...

Need support - extended breastfeeding issues by
Cathy Weeks
I always thought that I'd let Kivi self wean. She's now 2 days away
from her 4th birthday, and showing NO sign of weaning. And in fact,
she still seems to need it.
Our major breastfeedings each day are when we wake up, at naptime, and
at bedtime, though when the latter happens, she doesn't nurse...

Calcium needs for breastfeeding? by
Cathy Weeks
Help!
I broke my wrist in Feb... and everything is going fine. Physical
Therapy for 2 weeks helped me get mobility back, and strength is
coming along fine. However, the doctor yelled at me for not getting
enough calcium. I haven't bothered with prenatal tabs for the last
year or so. I do drink...

Funny nursing toddler story by
Cathy Weeks
Every night when I put Kivi to bed, I turn out the light, snuggle up
close, and she nurses to sleep. Sometimes, if she gets impatient with
me, I say "hold on, let me get my breast out!"
Since she's now in full-time daycare at Chris's work, and he brings
her home every evening. She's always very...

OT - how to keep a cast dry? by
Cathy Weeks
Hi all,
At the ripe old age of 34, I broke my wrist while my daughter and I
were visiting my parents. A moment of inattentiveness, and I slipped
on some ice, and broke my fall (and wrist) with my left arm.
One thing that has proved irritating is keeping the cast dry during
showers. I did a web...

I feel so sorry for her... by
Cathy Weeks
My daughter has a vomiting illness, and she wants to nurse so much!
And as a two-year-old, that's so hard for her. We're supposed to wait
1 hour after vomiting, then she can nurse a bit (but only a little
bit), then wait 15 minutes, and take another "sip". And continue on
taking little sips every...

Passing an illness via breastmilk? by
Cathy Weeks
Hi all,
A friend just called me - she's got an intestinal bug, and wondered if
she could pass it to her 8 month old via breastmilk. Should she keep
nursing, or pump-n-dump and use formula?
I told her that as far as I knew she could keep nursing, that if
anything, the breastmilk would help protect...

OT - Doll House experiences and questions (xpost) by
Cathy Weeks
Hi all,
When my mom went to dental school (I was nine when she started, 13
when she finished), she bought me a dollhouse kit to work on, because
I was nine years old, and it was going to be our first summer apart.
This was the summer of 1978, and the kit cost around $75.
At nine, I really wasn't...

milk and kisses by
Cathy Weeks
I was nursing my toddler when my husband walked into the room. I
grinned at him, and said "Kiss me!" So he bent down and kissed me.
Kivi pulled off my breast and said "kiss!" and leaned up and kissed
me.
Then she promptly went back to nursing.
It was so neat.

Odd places to nurse a toddler! by
Cathy Weeks
Hi all,
We just got back from a vacation in Florida, and I ended up nursing
Kivi (two years old in December) in two kind of unusual places.
1. The beach. I never thought I'd nurse on the beach - because I wear
one-piece swim suits that are just NOT accessible for nursing. But I
forgot my...

She had some peanuts, now what? by
Cathy Weeks
Ok, I've been avoiding peanuts for the last two years so peanut
proteins wouldn't show up in my breastmilk (I have had peanuts on very
rare occasions, in tiny amounts) and Kivi isn't allowed them until
after she's three (she just turned 2). We have a history of severe
food allergies (on both...

milk supply, night weaning, pumping, and menstruation questions by
Cathy Weeks
My daughter, who is 22.5 months old, is an enthusiastic nurser, and I
look forward to continuing our nursing relationship as long as she and
I both want to continue it.
But, as the mother of an older nursling I now have some questions that
aren't addressed specifically in the books.
1. I'm still...

OT - Potty training - can it be child-led? (xpost) by
Cathy Weeks
Hi all,
My daughter is almost two, and all of a sudden has started asking to
sit on the potty. She prefers to do it fully clothed, and while one
of her parents are sitting on the toilet, but I figured it was time to
start reading up on the topic.
My guess is that she's still a bit young for this...

Update - child-led potty training by
Cathy Weeks
Well....
Kivi went pee and poop on the potty. Ever since last weekend, when she
asked for the potty, the only encouragement I gave was "hey, Kivi, I'm
going to the bathroom, do you want to go with me?" She would sit on
the potty, usually fully clothed, but at bathtime, with a bare bottom.
Once...

Breastfeeding and baby weight loss by
Cathy Weeks
Hi,
I was nursing Kivi in the mother's room at Babies R Us, and a woman
with a 5-day old infant was there, first changing him, the trying to
nurse him. She told me she had given him his very first bottle that
day because he had lost a pound since birth, and the doctor thought he
should be...

What causes mastitis? by
Cathy Weeks
I wound up with mastitis for the first time - and my nurseling is
nearly 2 years old! I thought it was rare this far into a
trouble-free nursing relationship?
I woke up Wednesday morning (after having no symptoms previously) with
a sore breast, and felt awful - fever and muscle aches (on top of...

old frozen milk by
Cathy Weeks
Sigh...
I have a huge amount of breastmilk frozen in my deep freeze - most of
it is older than 18 months old. Hundreds of ounces.
Is there anything that can be done with it? Other than throwing it
away? Do any milk banks take milk that old?

Kivi is weaned - bittersweet by
Cathy Weeks
Hi all,
Kivi and I have finally weaned (I think anyway). She turns 5 years old
on Tuesday.
I have been weaning her for the last six months or so. Generally, it
was so gradual and gentle, that I don't think she really noticed. But
I was tired of it, and it was time.
For the last year, most of...

Glad I was still B/feeding! by
CC
DS (13 months) had a nasty chest infection (antibiotics and inhaler for it)
and one night felt so miserable that the only place he wanted to sleep was
next to me. We ended co-sleeping when he was about 5 months. And he wanted
to feed every 45 - 60 minutes for 10 mins the whole night - he's not fed...
