I'm back and with positive news! by
CJRA
Despite the stress of two hurricanes totally wreaking havoc with my
cycle (I was working ridiculously long hours all Sept), my body decided
to cooperate and I got a positive pregnancy test today! Because this
and the previous cycle were long and confusing, I'm not certain of the
exact date I...

Angelina's birth story (very long) by
cjra
The whole story:
3am July 3, woke up having to go to the bathroom (as usual), but this
time I had to keep going, and going....After trying to lie down and not
falling asleep, in between bathroom trips I walked around a lot,
stretched my back. Got down on all fours and rocked my pelvis,...

2 weeks old tonight! by
cjra
And what a difference 2 weeks has made. It's hard to believe it still.
We're making progress on feeding. I called the lactation consultant
this am to discuss the whole bottle feeding thing and she agreed it was
pointless, went to talk to the doc, who also agreed (I think it was the
nurses who had...

Synagis and RSV by

Given DD's lung issues now (they are in ok shape, but somewhat damaged
by the ventilator making her more susceptible to respiratory
infections), my boss (who is the director of health as well as a pedi)

pitocin to induce placenta delivery? by
cjra
How commonly is this given in the US?
SIL in Switzerland was telling an MD friend about us (homebirth) and
the woman went on about how there, a drug is given after birth to
prevent hemorrhage, but that midwives don't do it and therefore there's
a higher rate of maternal death due to hemorrhage...

IKEA diaper changing station (US) by
cjra
Does anyone in the US have an IKEA diaper changing table? Do you use
the inflatable IKEA pad or have you found another?
I ask specifically for the US because I've recently learned the
standard US diaper changing table/pad is of course bigger than the
European style. grrrr. I like the contour pad...

final update - ectopic by
cjra
Thank you to all for your support thru this ordeal. I am writing from
hospital having had emergency surgery last night.
My u/s was supposed to be today, but after feeling dizzy, with a pain
in my shoulder/neck and some shortness of breath, I called the gyn who
said to come on in for an u/s - this...

Going through the "why me?!" phase by
cjra
I'm usually not one to wallow in self-pity, and both DH and I have
always tried to focus on the positive - our motto has been "We're
lucky in our bad luck", but both of us have kind of been hit with a
feeling of "Why can't we get this to work easily?"
I know I shouldn't complain, provided we chart...

5 day old update by
cjra
Our wonderful little daughter is making incredible progress. They took
her off the regular ventilator on Friday, just using pressure support,
and they also stopped all meds except for the occassional pain meds and
antibiotics. They also started feeding her breastmilk. She did have a
'setback' that...

My mom thanked me for telling her *not* to come to the birth by
cjra
Some of you may recall I had asked my mom not to travel here (she lives
in CA, I'm in TX) for the birth, and preferably to wait til 6-8 weeks
so that she can be here at a more useful time, as I transition back to
work. She was ok with that, respected our wishes.
now she's relieved.
I told her of...

Live in nanny rates by
cjra
I realise this varies drastically from place to place, I'm just trying
to get a general idea of salaries, hours worked, how the situation
works out, etc.
Here's our situation, which is still a hypothetical:
We're hoping my soon to be 18 yr old niece who will graduate HS this
year will take up the...

Follow up question Level II u/s by
cjra
If it's non-invasive (or no more so than the regular u/s), and gives a
clearer answer to potential problems than the triple screen, why is the
triple screen done in the first place?
I can see doing it before amnio - not only is it invasive but more
expensive and not worth it if it's unnecessary....

What are valid health reasons for induction? by
cjra
I'm just curious.
I can see the health need if a pg goes *too* long, like more than 42
weeks, or if there's some particular risk to the baby because of the
mom's health status, but it seems induction happens *a lot* these days.

Thought some of you might be interested in this from MMWR. No stats on
which of these were homebirths, birth centers, or hospitals

Testing for Gestation Diabetes - how relevant is it, really? by
cjra
I understand the standard method is to drink a high sugar drink and
basically shock the system, then test blood levels to determine how
well the body tolerates glucose. Is that correct?
But, how relevant is that really, if one never consumes such sugar in
one go anyway?
I understand the basics of...

Being called "Mama" by random people by
cjra
Or not so random. These are co-workers, guys I know well. They say it
by way of greeting as in "Hey Mama! How ya doin?" and acknowledging the
pregnancy. For the most part I think it's kind of sweet, but it always
throws be a bit. They never called me that pre-preg, the most they'd
say, if not my...

homebirth but no childbirth classes? by
cjra
How valuable did you find the Bradley classes, especially if you
planned a homebirth?
In our mutual distraction, both my midwife and I kind of forgot about
this, and while we can still get enrolled in one class (not hospital
led), we'd only make the first 8-10 sessions before the baby is here.
Not...
