how often do ultrasounds occur? by Lydia
Barring any other problems requiring the use of ultrasound to diagnose, how many ultrasounds are usually given in a "normal" pregnancy? I have no clue why I was thinking this, but in my head I thought they would be ordered say once per month after a certain point in pregnancy - like from 4 or 5...

Stretch marks/scarring by Mary Gordon
Stretch marks are partial thickness ‘tears’ in the skin from the inside and are essentially scars. As with all scars, they are red to purple in color early on, and they generally fade to a paler color with time. There are some treatments available for reducing the appearance stretch...

Upset- Hep B vaccine and daycare issue by laurie
My daycare provider told me yesterday that she is being audited in November, and the new rules say that a child MUST have two Hepatitis B vaccine doses by the time they turn 18 months old. This is in New Hampshire- don't know if it's a state rule or national. Christopher has had all his vaccines...

First appointment with new midwife by Sarah Vaughan
I've had to join a new general practice now that we've moved. The one in our area is actually one I've worked at a couple of years back, when I needed to do some videos of my consultations for an exam I was doing and this practice was the only one in the area with a video camera. Ideally I'd have...

Poll: paternity leave by emilymr
What kinds of paternity leave do your partners get? We just found out that DH gets *one day* -- I was pretty appalled, but maybe that's standard? A woman in my prenatal yoga class said Google gives 2 weeks, AND they provide all meals for those 2 weeks! We were all exclaiming how short 2 weeks...

Timing of antenatal classes? by Sarah Vaughan
Our antenatal classes start next week, when I'll be 34 weeks. This sounded a bit late to me, as when I read about women going to antenatal classes they all seem to start at an earlier stage. I thought maybe it was just because we'd just moved into the area, and maybe I'd missed an earlier series...

Using 2nd hand bottles by Cathy
I should initially state that I intend to breastfeed. But this time, I hope to give an occasional bottle of expressed milk (or rather, I hope someone else will!). I was given 6 Avent bottles that have been well used (I have an Isis pump). As they can be sterilised, it doesn't seem too big a...

The midwife came round today as promised, and got all my booking details as well as doing the 34-week check. She spent ages chatting - must have been more than an hour and a half altogether. I raised DH's concerns about me going to the birthing centre instead of the hospital, and she reassured us...
