life is good here by lm
My boys just finished their first school year in our new hometown. My 10-year-old -- principal target of his father's and stepmother's lunacy -- was given a certificate for "most improved" in his grade (out of ~150 kids!) Both are doing well here but my 10-year-old is thriving. Moving away is not...

we've got a new poet laureate by lm
-- Ted Kooser -- and I was reading some of his poems. This one might appeal to Joelle: Skater She was all in black but for a yellow pony tail that trailed from her cap, and bright blue gloves that she held out wide, the feathery fingers spread, as surely she stepped, click-clack, onto the...

I don't like my kid's friends! by lm
I mean, I like them, but... he's 10 and moved here a year ago. The kids he's chosen to hang out with are the class clown type. I *love* the class clown type. Irreverence is our friend. But these kids are a little past irreverent and bordering on disrespectful. My rules are pretty firm but...

chores? by lm
Just wondering what everyone's kids do, and at what ages. So far my kids' chores are pretty minimal. Set/clear the table, take out the trash, clean their rooms, put away the laundry.... It's springtime and I'm ready to put them to work washing cars and weeding. What else? lm

April fools ideas? by lm
I need some new ideas, kids. I'll show you mine if you show me yours. Here's what worked last year: pebbles in the breakfast bowls buttermilk over the cereal sour cream in the toothpaste tube salt in the coffee (this one wasn't for the kids :-) This year I think I'm going to put dry cat food in...

in the news by lm
Lorena Bobbitt's sister Louella was arrested yesterday for an alleged attempt to perform the same act on her husband as her famous sister had done several years ago. Sources reveal the sister was not as accurate as Lorena. She allegedly missed the target and stabbed her husband in the upperthigh...

scoliosis update by lm
My peanut does not have scoliosis. X-rays show a 10-degree curve in his spine that the pediatrician attributed to one leg being 1.5 cm shorter than the other. Because it's so slight, pediatrician said let's just monitor it. I said I think I'll get a second opinion, so we went to the chiropractor....

skating story by lm
Joelle, I just heard the guest editor of this year's (2003) Best American Sports Writing on the radio and he spoke highly of a story about figure skating he'd chosen for the collection. Written by a woman, it was about the author (I think) living her life according to the lessons she'd learned from...
