Do you trust breastfeeding as a reliable form of birth control?

Many articles state that during the first six months of the postpartum period, if you continue to breastfeed regularly and exclusively and your periods do not return, breastfeeding is between 98% and 99% effective as a contraceptive. However, my OB/GYN told me that "breastfeeding is not reliable birth control" and a friend recently conceived during this period.

- Yes, during the first 6 months
- Yes, even after 6 months
- Somewhat, and if we do conceive again then that's fine
- No, we don't want to take the risk and use alternative birth control
- No, I got pregnant or know someone who got pregnant while still breastfeeding

Yes, I totally trust breastfeeding. Also, not having a partner helps a
lot regarding birth control ;-)

I had a friend just tell me today that she called the nurse, worried because
she hadn't started her period yet. Her baby is 3 months old, she is single
and hasn't been with anyone. I asked if she think she got pregnant in her
dreams or what? ;o) She had forgotten all about breastfeeding and periods.
This is her 5th child, also. She said she felt really stupid afterwards.
