mixed feelings about total bottle rejection
 

Well, it's official. After four months of taking EBM from a bottle
without too much fuss, ds#2 has decided that really boob is the only
way to go. The last three times he's been left with a bottle of EBM,
he's fussed and refused it most stubbornly. And don't get me started on
the failed attempts to give him formula (since expressing is such a
pain for me) on the odd time I've left him. Total revulsion, which
makes me proud but also annoys a bit, since it curtails the amount of
time I can leave him.

Oh, well. He's 5 months old now. Another month and then he'll be
starting solids, and he can have a sippy cup of water then, and between
those he should be able to tie himself over if I go out for 2+ hours.

Man, though, I need a break from the little people once in a while, you
know?

I hear ya. At least he did take a bottle for a while :o) Taryn refused one,
but now at 7 months she will drink a little water from a cup or her Nuby
sippy cup and she is eating solids nicely (even at what we ate tonight
without mashing it up!). You might get someone to try a sippy cup and see if
he will drink from that. How much can you express? Could you just mix a
little EBM with a little formula?

Well, I can express a fair bit. I have about 5 ounces going off in the
fridge right now. I know he won't drink it (it's been there since
Friday, and has been warmed up twice, and really should be tossed). I
can get about an ounce every 7-10 minutes, so it represents 35-50
minutes of work, spread out over the day whenever I could snatch a
minute away from them, which is why I'm reluctant to toss it. I have no
luck with pumps (letdown's fine, but the seal is never good and most of
it leaks out the bottom and into my lap instead of going into the
pump), so I'm hand expressing. I wonder if I got about 2 oz of EBM per
oz of formula in a cup, if he would drink it sitting at the table. He
is desperate to do whatever big bro does, so maybe if they both had
cups . . . certainly something to consider!

I can't wait to start him on table food. As it is, I have to hold back
from just sticking morsels off my plate into his mouth (as I did with J
when he was a slightly older baby).

Will he drink from a regular cup? You'd have to help him with it, but
my son started drinking from a cup at barely past 5 months old. He
didn't figure out how to use a sippy until he was about a year old.

Yeah, my eldest didn't work out the sippy cup thing till he was well
past a year - we couldn't impress upon him the need to tip it up! Last
night I expressed an ounce and gave the bottle to the baby to play with
in his swing. He did not bad at getting the nipple in his mouth and
chewing it. I think the big problem is that he's forgotten how to suck
from a bottle nipple. I bet the cup thing would work - that's what
we'll try when next the baby stays home with dh!

Thank you!!! Alas, we are all sick with a cold, and I don't want to
infect the two of you. Our only social interaction these days is with
the little germ vector downstairs, (dh calls her "plague girl"), since
she probably gave it to us in the first place . . .

At 5 months old, I wouldn't worry about leaving him without drink/food. I
think that if he was hungry, he'd take the bottle (or cup as others have
suggested). My best friend took a 5-month maternity leave with her 2nd DD.
When she went back to work, her baby wasn't taking a bottle at all. The
providers tried all manner of ways to get her to take formula, but she
refused. So, she went without until she reconnected with Mom. In the end,
I don't think it was an issue. So, I'd recommend not worrying over 2+
hours. How has your DS#2 acted other than when he was confronted with the
bottle?

I wonder if he's teething. My son started rejecting a bottle at about
6 months - and he'd had at least a bottle a day from the time he was
about 2 weeks old, so I doubt he forgot. He was *really* teething,
though, and all he wanted to do with the bottle was chomp on the nipple
while EBM sprayed everywhere.

Oh, yeah. He's been teething on and off for a couple of months now, and
is definitely going through a chomping phase. He doesn't have any
actual teeth yet, though. So far, he's only bit the nipple 3 or 4
times, which is good - we'll see how he does down the road!
