What triggers bad behavior for your kids?

My kids are 4 and 6, and they can have some TERRIBLE behavior. I'm
*trying* to figure out what triggers it as some days are good and some
are bad. Now, some of it may just be their age, but I'm finding a few
other things trigger it too.

A bad day can oftentimes happen when:
--My husband is with us. They do much better when it's just me and
them. Why is that?

Are they being worse or are the expectations different? I let more
stuff go than my DH does, so the kids appear to behave worse when he's
around, whereas I really believe it is often just our perception.

Or could it be that they are indulged more by you alone than when both
parents are present? If I take the kids (8, 4, and 6 mos) on an
outing, e.g., I make sure it's almost entirely kid-oriented, whereas
if DH is along, he wants them to conform to his desires for more of
the time. Sometimes they just can't manage it.

Or could it be time of day? My kids tend to be at their worst in the
evenings, when DH is home from work, because they're tired.

My kids' big triggers are hunger and fatigue, but both will also be
cranky if they're unhappy about something in their lives (more
relevant the older they get), and my son gets into trouble if he's
bored.
