Barbara (Circe) is out of ICU

Barbara was moved from the makeshift overflow ICU at Grossmont
Hospital (it's really their surgical recovery room) to a regular
hospital room after midnight last night. She is disconnected from all
the tubes, IVs, etc. and is able to be up and around. I came home
after she was settled in, about 1:30 a.m.

We aren't sure how much longer she will be in the hospital. I may
take my laptop computer in today and see if we can hook it up so that
she can get into the Internet and see all your good wishes.

Michael will take the kids up to see her this morning. She has a
breast pump to keep the pressure off and the supply going. I don't
know if there are any restrictions on her nursing due to any drugs
they are giving her, but if not, I'm sure Vernon will be right back at
it!

Hi -

I'm glad she's doing better! I hope she'll be seeing an allergist
PROMPTLY about her asthma. There's no excuse not to be on a regular
prevention plan.

Thank you for the updates. Please tell Barbara she has been in my
thoughts for a speedy and full recovery.

I'm so glad she's going to be OK! I just got back from vacation with
no usenet access to find this out!!! Barbara, when you get back onto
the net... I'm glad you're better! And you aren't allowed to let
anything happen to you! I need your voice of reason to help me think
through my crazier arguments! And of course your kiddos and family
need you even more!

Katie,

Thanks for all the updates on Barbara. I'm glad to hear that she is
doing better and is able to manage pumping, etc.

Barbara,

What a scare! I'm sure you will be happy to be out of the hospital
soon and at home with your family, where undoubtedly you will be more
comfortable.

Admittedly I'm quite sensitive on this topic because I suffer from
very bad asthma myself, but what makes you think that Barbara isn't
seeing an allergist and doesn't use preventive medications?

I know I do, and I still end up in the hospital every once in a while
because some trigger sets off my asthma to such an extent that even
with steriods and a rescue inhaler in every room of my home, I can't
guarantee perfect breathing.

Asthma is a very complicated disease, and every person has a different
reaction to the meds and to their triggers. Most severe asthmatics are
quite familiar with their prevantative plans, but that doesn't mean
they work. I use singulair daily, a steriod inhaler 2x/day, and I
still am not stable about 50% of the time, regardless of my
preventative measures. Even with prednisone, I have been hospitalized
for asthma. I see a pulminologist and an allergist all the time. I do
what's right for my case, but I still have severe asthma.

I guess what it boils down to is I read your post Beth, and I saw a
chide in there implying that Barbara isn't caring for her asthma
correctly according to your standards. I'm just trying to point out
that with severe asthma, you can do all the prevention in the world,
and still end up either in the hospital or dead. Asthma is a killer
disease. I don't think sending guilt along to someone in the hospital
is very fair.

That's good advice. Also, there is a new asthma med that just received FDA
approval. It's called Xolair

If you read the OP and the other posts, you will see that she has been
on medication since she was 2 1/2 years old.

She did have a prevention plan in place, I am sure.
