Baby names and NO idea

I don't have the time to dwell on this pregnancy like I did with #1 and it's
really obvious. I had names picked out the first week and all this shopping
to do and started working on the nursery. This time around, I figure we'll
wait until about 8.5 months and throw something together if we even fix the
room up before the birth- I saved all the baby gear so we have the crib and
swing etc. I saved clothing too a lot of which is unisex for the first
year..

Even worse though, I haven't a CLUE about names. I do think about it, but I
have not hit upon a name I really like for either gender and if I do have
something I'm partial to, I cannot come up with a nice middle name. Ack. Has
anyone else gone until the last minute and had no name?? I am far from last
minute- LOL. But I keep telling myself I won't think of names until the last
month or so.

I know what NOT to name. Any name that's in use by close relatives for their
kids, is a no go. And debatably, I try to stay away from names that are
exceedingly common around here, debatable because if we move it could
change. I try to stay away from names that I know too many of personally as
well.

One name I have always liked for a girl is Kate. Simply Kate. Kate
not-short-for-anything, Kate is the full name. Problem is I can't make it
work as a first name, only as a middle name, and I prefer to name my kids
what they'll be called as there first name, for no logical reason, it's just
a thing I have. My brother goes by his middle and all his mail and listings
are in his first name. Seems simple to avoid that.

So, Kate what? What Kate? I am out of ideas. Meredith Kate? Too clsoe to
Mary Kate.Someone suggested to me Katelyn Brooke, but I don't know...not
fond of Katelyn. If I did use, it would be Caitlyn. Or is it Caitlin? I am
growing fond of Caitlin/Caitlyn actually... what else goes well with plain
Kate though? Hannah Kate, I just don't know.

For a boy I have even less ideas as I don't have a name that I love like
Kate. Zachary?.....William....? Joshua? I can't come up with anything. All
the boy names I like are "taken" by family members. I like Thomas but it's
way taken. I like Benjamin, it's used by someone nearby and I would feel
awkward to name my kid that too. Same with Adam. It's actually used by two
people so it would be more awkward, otherwise I like Adam...grrr! It really
would feel awkward to name my kid something that someone related to me or
near me in some way has named their kid, you know? They took all the good
names, how could they do that to me? ;) :P

LOl but really, I feel like if I have nothing else ready that's fine but
it's too bad not to have a name. This means I will surely go into labor
early and will not be prepared.

Baby names and NO idea

we were similar the 2nd time around, we decided when I was about 4-5 months
gone that we wouldn't use the name Ada as a first name, then never really
got round to having another conversation about it....guess what DD is
called, yes, she's Ada.

Really preparing the essentials takes minimal time, I had an urge at about
34 weeks to go shopping and get some stuff done, but literally, it was 2-3
shops (and in the US it would probably be 1), then maybe half a day getting
things out at home and I was done. I didn't have a hospital bag packed, we
were planning a homebirth anyway, but at that stage I put a box in a
cupboard of things I wanted to hand immediately after the birth, rather than
during, when the end of the pregnancy went stinky, it was a relief I'd done
those things and when in the hospital I could just ask DH to stick that box
in the car for afterwards (I was in hospital a week prior to the birth).

I like Madeleine Kate. I also love the name Katie and one of the names on
my list was Katie Scarlet (like in Gone With The Wind) which I think sounds
so pretty.

There are lots of baby naming websites that you can use where you can put in
a name you like and it will come up with suggestions. Or you can ask for
names beginning with a certain letter or with so many syllables. Or you may
just wait until he/she is born and then decide he looks like a Michael or a
Renee, ya know?

I know the feeling. I have a girl name and we're all pretty sure it will
be a girl. (Sara Katrin) but all of a sudden the baby doesn't "feel"
like a Sara anymore, plus I just found out Sara/Sarah is number 7 in the
most popular names list this year. YAY. So now I'm trying to find
another girl name with an S. And there aren't any! I like Salome but Sam
already vetoed it and I kind of don't see me yelling
"Salomeeeeeeeeeeeee" on the playground, Stefanie, Sonja, Susanne, Sabine
all make me shudder because I know at least one of each who was a stupid
cow. I like Sandra, but that's my cousins name. And really there aren't
that many more that are pronouncable in german as well as in
english/french. I like biblical names even though I don't "do"
god/religion, simply because they're usually pronouncable in any
language. I like Abigail, but in german... No go. Besides, doesn't start
with an S. I like Ruth, but Sam doesn't. He wants a Sara Anna but Anna's
my mothers name so I vetoed that *lol*.
I hate picking out names. For Sam it took nearly the whole pregnancy and
even then I wasn't sure, but I looked at him and he was a Samuel
Christoph, so that was alright.
I have no boy name. It better be a girl.

All that said, I will go with Sara Katrin if I don't have some kind of
epiphany or a name comes to me in my sleep.

I also haven't done a thing concerning baby furniture. I have 3 plastic
boxes of clothes (one for newborn, and the other two for the larger
sizes), they're stackable and I used a system like that for Sam. No
searching for clothes that fit, just put the too small ones away and
grab something from another bin.
I'll have to figure out where to put the changing-thing which is
currently in Sams room being used as his dresser, but he agreed that the
baby can have it, so that's ok. It's not like she'll need the drawers
anyway. Then I'll have to work out where to put my large desk which is
currently in my bedroom "holding" most of my sewing stuff. There'a
really no other place for it though. UGH. I hate having to move
furniture around!

Well, another 2.5 months, that's plenty of time, right? Right?

Which is why you aren't fretting about any of this stuff. The first time
around, you're so thrilled and excited that you want to take care of
everything right away, and even 6 weeks feels like you've missed half of the
pregnancy already! But with #2, there is a bit of reality that sinks in. A
bit of the old "been there, done that" and don't need to buy the onesie just
yet. It's not a bad thing. It's just that you've already been pregnant
once, so the newness and shock has worn off. You know what to expect, and
you have another child to take care of. Who has time to navel gaze for any
other pregnancy than the first?

Even worse though, I haven't a CLUE about names. I do think about it, but

I can't remember how far along you are, but it's nothing that needs to be
decided any time soon. Really. That should take the pressure off. Our
good friends just had a baby 3 days ago. A week before that they were still
unsure of the final name choice. Didn't mean that they weren't exicted
about the baby, or that they didn't want it, or were lazy, it just meant
that they hadn't decided on the final name yet. Once they saw the baby,
they chose names from their list that worked for them, based on family
names.

I know what NOT to name. Any name that's in use by close relatives for
their kids, is a no go. And debatably, I try to stay away from names that
are exceedingly common around here, debatable because if we move it could
change. I try to stay away from names that I know too many of personally

One name I have always liked for a girl is Kate. Simply Kate. Kate
not-short-for-anything, Kate is the full name. Problem is I can't make it

am growing fond of Caitlin/Caitlyn actually... what else goes well with

I like Kate, although I tend to like longer names with good nicknames. I
like Kate alot, but I'd want to use a longer version of the name and call
her Kate. I have a Taylor that we call TayTay, although when she's older
she'll just be Taylor. Not a very nick-namable name. My second is Addison,
who we called Addie from the get go. I sort of like the formal name verses
the private name concept. Maybe because my name is Jamie and I always got
asked, "So, what is that short for?" Nothing. Just Jamie. Actually in
high school I wanted a nickname so bad that I "lengthened" my name to James
and that's what my close friends called me (and some still do). Anyway, I
digress.... Personally I think Caitlin/Caitlyn is one of those popular names
that I wouldn't use. I like more traditional -- Katherine, call her Kate.

In terms of middle names, do you have female family members that you'd like
to honor? Mom, grandmom, aunts, great aunts or great grandmothers? Anyone
up there in the family tree from 50-100 years ago? Are there any good last
names in that tree that might work? Somewhere in our family tree we had a
woman named Lainie Gillespie, and I always wanted to use that name. But,
Kate Gillespie, for example, if Gillespie was your maiden name, or a family
name that you wanted to carry on, could sound nice. If you chose a short
one syllable first name like Kate, I think a 2-3 syllable middle name works
best. What about Kate Meredith. Kate Elizabeth. Kate Alexandra. Kate
Delaney. Kate Mackenzie (not normally a fan of MacKenzie, but it flows
nicely). Kate Mallory. Kate Adelle. Kate Ashely. Kate Charlotte. Kate
Miranda. What about Jocelyn Kate? I could go on, but I don't know your
last name...check out the babynamesworld website. They have a great search
feature, where you can specify names that are X letters long, X syllables
long, start with X letter, or start with any letter except X. You can say
that you don't want a name that starts with the same initial as your last
name, etc, plus specify all sorts of origins and meanings, etc. It's very
cool.

It's actually used by two

really would feel awkward to name my kid something that someone related to
me or near me in some way has named their kid, you know? They took all the
good names, how could they do that to me? ;) :P

I can see not wanting to use a name that is already in your family, at least
not one that is there a lot. But it would also depend on who had already
used it, and how often I saw them. For example, if it was my sister, I
wouldn't use it. If it was a third cousin twice removed who I never ever
see, then I'd use it. Especially if it was a family name and we were both
honoring the same grandfather, etc, but even if I just really liked it. So
for me, just because someone else has used it, doesn't automatically take it
out of the running for me.

Same goes with friends/neighbors, or people I know. Mostly it would depend
on why I liked the name (again, if it was after a relative, or just a name
that I liked), and the relationship I had with the people who had a kid with
that name. And how hard was it for me to come up with a name that I liked?
A neighbor down the street, or another mom in my moms group? Not a big deal
to me, since I probably wouldn't be spending the rest of my life wtih these
people, nor would my child.

Dh and I named our first daughter years before we had her. I had been
carrying around the name Taylor since I was in my early teens. It's my
mother's middle name, and at the time that I decided I wanted to use it, it
was a boys name. I would tell people that I was going to have a little girl
and name her Taylor, and they look at me with surprise. Of course 20+ years
pass before I actually have my little girl to name Taylor, and by then the
90's had come through and made it a hugely popular name for girls and for
boys. But I decided not to let that sway me. It was a family name and a
name that I loved, and something I'd always envisioned, and why should I let
the fact that a bazillion other people had daughters named Taylor to stop me
from having my own daughter named Taylor. And I've not regretted it yet.
Her middle name is dh's mom's middle name, Marlys. (side note -- Ohhh, Kate
Marlys has a nice ring to it...dh's mom's name is Kay Marlys, which is why
it rings nicely with me!)

Anyway, when it came time to think of names for our second daughter, we make
lists and wracked our brains, but nothing was *it*. I was talking to an
internet friend from across the country who was adopting a baby girl from
Guatemala. She told me that she was going to name the baby Addison Grace,
after two maternal grandmothers. Addison after Adelle, but never to be
called Addie. As she told me this (via e-mail), I suddenly remembered a
list of names that I'd written up in my early 20's. Addison Grace was on
that list. I e-mailed her back and told her my story and asked her if she
would mind if I used the name as well. She said she wouldn't mind. After
all, we were on an e-mail list together, but we lived across the country and
would likely never meet. And even if she would have minded (or did mind and
just didn't admit to it), I would have used the name anyway. Because I
liked it and it resonated for me. It turns out that it has some family
connections on my mother's side, so that was a nice bonus. But mostly, we
just liked it, and knew it was the name.

The other thing that I really like about some of these name websites like
babynameworld is that you put in a name that you like, and they give you
similar names. For example, I liked Allison, but it seemed common.
Although not used that much any more, but eh. But later I realised that
Addison and Allison are VERY similar names. So if you like Thomas, maybe
Timothy is similar enough?

There is a book called Baby Name Wizard (and a website with sample pages)
where you can find names based on "Style Families" or "Name Snapshots" or
"Name Trends" or "Surnames", etc. If you like one name, they can give you
other examples of names you might also like. You said you liked Zachary,
Adam, Benjamin and Joshua. Those are all Bibical names. You might also
like Caleb, or Ethan, or Jacob, Jeremy, Joel, Nathan, Simon, or Micah. In
Style Families, they give you a name, and then tell you what their brothers
or sisters would be named, or variants, or nicknames. For example, for
Caleb, they say sisters would be Abigail, Chloe, Hanna, Sophie & Isabel, and
brothers would be Gabriel, Cole, Connor, Elijah and Noah. I like all of
those!

LOl but really, I feel like if I have nothing else ready that's fine but
it's too bad not to have a name. This means I will surely go into labor
early and will not be prepared.

Don't worry about it. Really. You have plenty of time. Do you have a dh?
What does he say? What does he lean towards?

Frankly, I like it. It sounds like it resonates, and who cares if it's a
popular name. It's your kid. And it's not a bad name, or trendy sounding.
It's classic.

I have a Jessica Kate :) She was going to be Madison Kate, but we changed
our minds :) What about Katie - I think if you're looking for a middle name,
you might find it flows better. My friend was Katie Dawn, and I think that
flowed quite well. If I'd had a boy he'd have been Cameron Jay. But if I
have a boy now, I'm stuffed - my brother since had a boy called Cameron
William! If I have another girl, she'll be Gracie Megan, but if I have a
boy, he'll be something David. Maybe Andrew David. I don't know :) Good luck
choosing - don't forget you don't have to pick a definite for a while!
(Jessica was also going to be Carmen Jaye for a while!)

But then what do I know - I definitely didn't want an S name! ;) Didn't

I don't have the time to dwell on this pregnancy like I did with #1 and
it's really obvious. I had names picked out the first week and all this
shopping to do and started working on the nursery. This time around, I
figure we'll wait until about 8.5 months and throw something together if we
even fix the room up before the birth- I saved all the baby gear so we have
the crib and swing etc. I saved clothing too a lot of which is unisex for
the first year..

#2 and #3 were both decided the morning after I'd gone into labour.
Good thing I don't have very quick labour times!

I know the feeling. I have a girl name and we're all pretty sure it will

a Sara anymore, plus I just found out Sara/Sarah is number 7 in the most

name with an S. And there aren't any! I like Salome but Sam already vetoed
it and I kind of don't see me yelling "Salomeeeeeeeeeeeee" on the
playground, Stefanie, Sonja, Susanne, Sabine all make me shudder because I
know at least one of each who was a stupid cow. I like Sandra, but that's
my cousins name. And really there aren't that many more that are
pronouncable in german as well as in english/french. I like biblical names
even though I don't "do" god/religion, simply because they're usually
pronouncable in any language. I like Abigail, but in german... No go.
Besides, doesn't start with an S. I like Ruth, but Sam doesn't. He wants a
Sara Anna but Anna's my mothers name so I vetoed that *lol*.
I hate picking out names. For Sam it took nearly the whole pregnancy and
even then I wasn't sure, but I looked at him and he was a Samuel
Christoph, so that was alright.
I have no boy name. It better be a girl.

What about Suzannah?
#2 is Anna Sarah (#1 might have been Sarah but we knew too many to want to
use it for #2)
I like Abigail, but I really dislike Abi as an abbreviation, and neighter of
us is keen on Gail.
Other biblical names I can think of offhand:
Rachel
Rebecca
Hannah
Mary/Maria
Tabitha
Eve
Deborah
Esther
Marianne
Martha
Miriam
Joaana/Joanne

Debbie

All that said, I will go with Sara Katrin if I don't have some kind of
epiphany or a name comes to me in my sleep.

I also haven't done a thing concerning baby furniture. I have 3 plastic
boxes of clothes (one for newborn, and the other two for the larger
sizes), they're stackable and I used a system like that for Sam. No
searching for clothes that fit, just put the too small ones away and grab
something from another bin.
I'll have to figure out where to put the changing-thing which is currently
in Sams room being used as his dresser, but he agreed that the baby can
have it, so that's ok. It's not like she'll need the drawers anyway. Then
I'll have to work out where to put my large desk which is currently in my
bedroom "holding" most of my sewing stuff. There'a really no other place
for it though. UGH. I hate having to move furniture around!

Well, another 2.5 months, that's plenty of time, right? Right?

Sofia might work actually. Sarabeth she'd probably end up spelling for
every teacher, just like most of the other names ;-)

Btw: Where did you get all those names? I don't think my baby name books

Frankly, I like it. It sounds like it resonates, and who cares if it's a
popular name. It's your kid. And it's not a bad name, or trendy sounding.
It's classic.

I know, but I see myself standing at the playground yelling

That said, Nicole was a popular name when I was born and I still only

I think I must be a bit unusal judging by everyone's replies to your post.
With William it took us ages to find many boys names we liked and in the end
this was the only one we both liked. Thankfully we loved it and he suits his
name. Girls names were easier. This time round we've glanced through one
book. I highlighted a few names and df picked out one girl and one boy I
really liked that he really liked too - so looks like job done. One is from
the original boys list - James - and the other a complete newbie - Isobel!.
I've always loved the name James and I think it goes with William but was
surprised at Isobel. Maybe perhaps because it's like Elizabeth we can't do
because of family issues that even I'm not insensitive enough to bypass.

As for the buying stuff. We've been incredibly fortunate and have been given
some money, so a chunk of that is dedicated to #2. I adored buying new stuff
the first time and I feel exactly the same with this little beanie. To me
it's just as thrilling as #1 and I'm following every growth milestone. I
also think in a way it's a chance for me to try and not make some mistakes I
think I made with William because I didn't find my instinctive 'mothering'
skills very easily with a screaming newborn and it definitely affected the
decisions I made. I have a clearer idea of what to expect and how to deal
with it and I'm hoping that will help me bond quicker with #2 than I did
with William. Or just to find out that I'm just not a newborn type - who
knows?

That's pretty typical. By the time I was on my third, I couldn't tell you
right off how far along I was, lol. There was just no time to belly gaze
like there was the first time around.

This time around, I figure we'll wait until about 8.5 months and throw
something together if we even fix the room up before the birth- I saved
all the baby gear so we have the crib and swing etc. I saved clothing too

Now you know that you don't all that stuff right in the beginning. I have to
laugh at myself now when I think back to my first and I had to have
everything, like high chair, etcxx. When in reality, all you need in the
beginning is a place to sleep, clothes, and your milk.

Even worse though, I haven't a CLUE about names. I do think about it, but
I have not hit upon a name I really like for either gender and if I do
have something I'm partial to, I cannot come up with a nice middle name.
Ack. Has anyone else gone until the last minute and had no name?? I am far
from last minute- LOL. But I keep telling myself I won't think of names
until the last month or so.

Well it's still pretty early. With my second, we couldn't agree on names and
had a few picked out. We decided to wait until she was born to see what she
looked like and then decided on a name. It's really not that big of a deal.

As far as the names go, name your child what you want and forget about what
others have named their kids. I do think in the same family might be
awkward, but not if it was just my friends who had the same name. My friend
and I both named our kids the same, no biggy.

LOl but really, I feel like if I have nothing else ready that's fine but
it's too bad not to have a name. This means I will surely go into labor
early and will not be prepared.

I think having clothes ready and a place to sleep is far more important.

Ok, so for a list of German "S" names for a girl, go he

http://www.babynology.com/german_bab...0_meaning.html

Perhaps something will strike your fancy. :-)

My question is "Why 'S'?" As someone who grew up in a family of all
'S' names (including the pets), let me tell you, it was *highly*
annoying. I've sworn off giving any names to future children that are
duplicates of any current family members (so for next baby, A, G, J,
and S are completely out). Anyway, I just thought I 'd throw that out
there in case you hadn't thought of it. :-)

So, Kate what? What Kate? I am out of ideas. Meredith Kate? Too clsoe to
Mary Kate.Someone suggested to me Katelyn Brooke, but I don't know...not
fond of Katelyn. If I did use, it would be Caitlyn. Or is it Caitlin? I am
growing fond of Caitlin/Caitlyn actually... what else goes well with plain
Kate though? Hannah Kate, I just don't know.

I say if you like Kate, go with Kate. For a middle name, I would
choose a name with 2-3-4 syllables instead of just one. How many
syllables is your last name? What letter does it start with? I'd also
probably stay away from hard 'a' sounds to vary the name a little.
Ones I came up with:

Kate Alexandra
Kate Elizabeth
Kate Madeline
Kate Meredith
Kate Margaret
Kate Samantha
Kate Victoria
Kate Eleanor
Kate Evelyn
Kate Rebecca
Kate Natalia
Kate Allison
Kate Alyssa
Kate Gabrielle
Kate Rochelle
Kate Danielle
Kate Sophia

I personally think Kate Elizabeth or Kate Danielle sound to my ears
like they flow better than some of the others. Keep in mind that Kate
means "pure", so you may want to shy away from middle names that mean
something other than what you like (We were originally thinking
Katheryn Rochelle for a girl's name, but that means "pure sheep", and
we didn't like that meaning, so we chose not to go that route...).

They took all the good
names, how could they do that to me? ;) :P

If you really like Adam, what about Aidan, Aaron, Ethan, or Evan? If
you like Thomas, what about Lucas, Tobias, or Travis? Can't really
think of anything similar to Benjamin. It sounds like you like fairly
classic names, that might also be Biblical names? I'm in that sector,
so:

Matthew
Benjamin
Joshua*
Jonathan*
Thomas*
Timothy*
James*
Aaron*
Nathan* (although I actually prefer Nathaniel)
Daniel*
Joseph
Samuel
Josiah
Adam
Alexander (obviously)
Andrew*
Stephen*
Christopher*
Isaac
Jacob*
Jonah
Michael
Peter
Paul*
Philip
Seth*
Simon
Zachary/Zachariah

(I'm sort of in the same quandry as you are--I have a large family,
and we're very close, so I have to be *very* careful about names and
either giving people inflated egos or showing "favortism" Yet many of
the names I love have already been used! The ones above with * are the
ones already used in the family!)

The way people change spellings, almost anything could need to be spelled,
even the teacher doesn't think so. Look how many names are on the Top 100
SSN List that are on there several times with variant spellings.

Madison sounds simple, right? But some people spell it Madyson now. I
remember back in the day Melissa was a very common name and now I see it
coming back, but it's often spelled Melyssa. I even know a Malyssa. Jacob,
Jakob, Katelynn, Kaitlin, Catelyn, too many to list, and as I was thinking
of using Caitlin I realized I can't remember the "proper" way to spell it, I
am still thinking is it Caitlin or Caitlyn?? LOL..And then I wonder, would
that make her Cate or Cait? :P

Yeah, and that's pretty convenient because I can do with the encouragement
:-)

Well I like the sibling sound of Samuel and Sofia. Sam and Sofia. Works
for me.

I grew up with a sibling who had the same first initial as I did, and it

have an older sister that I met later on, and her name starts with an L.

I don't really have an answer. I don't know why I want another S-Name.
I just keep getting stuck at the S every time I look for names for nr2. I
wanted a Hanna, but a friend had her baby in January and she's a Hannah
Kathryn, so that's out... And yeah, I just keep getting stuck (in a good
way) at the S every time.

My biggest issue is that the names sound good together, for siblings. I do
tend to lean towards the same initial, but again, that's because of my
history. Although we didn't do that with our kids. We didn't specifically
decide not to, we just found the name that we liked and it didn't start with
a T.

I know the feeling. I have a girl name and we're all pretty sure it
will
be a girl. (Sara Katrin) but all of a sudden the baby doesn't "feel"
like
a Sara anymore, plus I just found out Sara/Sarah is number 7 in the
most
popular names list this year. YAY. So now I'm trying to find another
girl
name with an S. And there aren't any! I like Salome but Sam already
vetoed
it and I kind of don't see me yelling "Salomeeeeeeeeeeeee" on the
playground, Stefanie, Sonja, Susanne, Sabine all make me shudder
because I
know at least one of each who was a stupid cow. I like Sandra, but
that's
my cousins name. And really there aren't that many more that are
pronouncable in german as well as in english/french. I like biblical
names
even though I don't "do" god/religion, simply because they're usually
pronouncable in any language. I like Abigail, but in german... No go.
Besides, doesn't start with an S. I like Ruth, but Sam doesn't. He
wants a
Sara Anna but Anna's my mothers name so I vetoed that *lol*.
I hate picking out names. For Sam it took nearly the whole pregnancy
and
even then I wasn't sure, but I looked at him and he was a Samuel
Christoph, so that was alright.
I have no boy name. It better be a girl.

All that said, I will go with Sara Katrin if I don't have some kind of
epiphany or a name comes to me in my sleep.

I quite like Samira/Semira, I think it works well in German too. Serena,
Scarlett and Shannon are all quite nice. Sienna might work quite well. I
like Sylvie.

But then what do I know - I definitely didn't want an S name! ;) Didn't
think they went well with my surname!

Lucy x

actually, I do quite like Sienna Katrin!

Sam and Samira? hmmm. That might not be a smart move.

Hehe oh yeah :)

Well, even if she had to spell it for teachers, the plus side is that all
she has to say is "How do I spell it? Just like it sounds, Sara - no H
and Beth" Unless Beth is just not a name ever heard in your parts.

I'm not sure there is a "proper" way to spell it, it's not really a
proper name. The Irish way would be Caitlin but thats really pronounced
Catchleen. The Katelynn pronunciation is an anglicisation of the Irish
name as far as I know. There is no y in the Irish language so I'd rule
out Caitlyn. I'm not a fan of spelling names differntly to try to make
them unique, I know so many Kirstin, Kirstyn, Keerstin, Kristin,
Krystin's etc it drives me mad.

I saw a show on tv the other night about celebrity names, a rapper named
her daughter God'iss, I wanted to scream!

Well, in the end, if you can't find another name you love, use it, and your
siblings be damned! After all, it's your family, and you can name your kids
what you want. Having siblings have the same first initial isn't the worst
thing in the world, and it's not your fault that your parents took it to
extremes and made you all crazy!

I honestly would NOT just name her Kate. Kate is a nickname, and it's
really best to avoid giving nick-names as given names. (If only
because people WILL assume that her 'real name' is Katherine. If you
like Kate, name her Katherine (or Katlyn) and call her Kate. It's not
really a problem in the sense that calling people by their middle
names can cause problems over time. (Everyone knows that Kate is
Katherine and Katherine is Kate, but people may not know that Susan is
Jane or Mary is Tabitha.)

And there are lots of middle names that go well with Katherine.
(Remember too that, by and large, people DON'T call other people by
their full names ... barring the times when you're screaming at "Kate
Matilda ... get your butt into the house right now!") so while it's
nice to have a name that 'flows well' with the first name, it really
isn't vital. If you're set on calling her Kate, I'd give a middle name
with 3 syllables, which usually works well with either one syllable
(Kate) or 2 (Kath'rin [the usual pronunciation ...] or any of the
other common nicknames (Katie, Kathy).

Beyond that, pick up some baby books (and check out babyname web
sites) and browse for a while. (We had the problem that there were
tooMANY names we liked ... fortunately, there were comparatively few
that both of us liked, so that narrowed it down considerably.)

been a boy he would have been Nathan Jeremy.)

What about Kaitlyn?
My DD is Kaitlyn Maree. I broke tradition with her name though, my 5 older
children's middle names all start with an 'L', they were all born at a
hospital with midwives and doctors.....Kaitlyn made her arrival on the
dining room floor assissted my none other than myself and hubby!
So she has my middle name.

I know what NOT to name. Any name that's in use by close relatives for
their kids, is a no go. And debatably, I try to stay away from names that
are exceedingly common around here, debatable because if we move it could
change. I try to stay away from names that I know too many of personally
as well.

One name I have always liked for a girl is Kate. Simply Kate. Kate
not-short-for-anything, Kate is the full name. Problem is I can't make it
work as a first name, only as a middle name, and I prefer to name my kids
what they'll be called as there first name, for no logical reason, it's
just a thing I have. My brother goes by his middle and all his mail and
listings are in his first name. Seems simple to avoid that.

So, Kate what? What Kate? I am out of ideas. Meredith Kate? Too clsoe to
Mary Kate.Someone suggested to me Katelyn Brooke, but I don't know...not
fond of Katelyn. If I did use, it would be Caitlyn. Or is it Caitlin? I
am growing fond of Caitlin/Caitlyn actually... what else goes well with
plain Kate though? Hannah Kate, I just don't know.

For a boy I have even less ideas as I don't have a name that I love like
Kate. Zachary?.....William....? Joshua? I can't come up with anything. All
the boy names I like are "taken" by family members. I like Thomas but it's
way taken. I like Benjamin, it's used by someone nearby and I would feel
awkward to name my kid that too. Same with Adam. It's actually used by two
people so it would be more awkward, otherwise I like Adam...grrr! It
really would feel awkward to name my kid something that someone related to
me or near me in some way has named their kid, you know? They took all the
good names, how could they do that to me? ;) :P

LOl but really, I feel like if I have nothing else ready that's fine but
it's too bad not to have a name. This means I will surely go into labor
early and will not be prepared.

I also love the name Kate, on it's own. I think it's a beautiful, strong,
confident name. There are so many great combinations you could come up
with- why use it for the middle name? Surely you could find a couple of
great names to use as a middle name for Kate. Kate Elizabeth? Kate
Alexandra? Kate Bernadette? Kate Julianna? Kate Margaret.........Kate
Georgianna........Kate Marie or Maria..............Kate Rebecca (I like that
one a lot)! ............I think it needs to be a strong, classic name.

In my experience (I live in MA), Zachary, William and Joshua are all very
popular. I know 3 little Williams! Benjamin is very nice- it was our 2nd
choice for our son.

Don't worry, you'll come up with something. I didn't go in to labor with my
son having no clues on a name, but he wasn't named for a few hours at least.
My niece wasn't named for 2 days.
