What I Saw in Target Today
 

So, since it was a rainy holiday here in NY, DH caved and agreed to take me
and Laszlo to Target so I could check out the new Liz Lange maternity
clothes along with a million other things I really don't need. As we were
walking through the very crowded aisles, we saw a momma with a relatively
young baby, with her boob out and she was holding the baby and the baby was
nursing while she was shopping. It looked natural as anything, but of
course people were looking twice at her, probably because of how comfortable
she was with her lil nursling.

Just wanted to share.

Must be something in the air. Just the other day at the mall, I saw two
women walking around in two different stores obviously nursing their
newborns (no slings), and I wanted to say something to them, because
it's so seldom you see anyone nursing. I wonder what is the appropriate
thing to say, if anything. Rebekah was with me at the mall, and she saw
one of the babies and said, "dat baby is NUSSIN'!" but I'm not sure if
the mother or anyone else heard her ;-)


Emily, who saw a crying newborn in a stroller on the same visit, with
the dad pushing it saying, "the book says you're supposed to like this"
while a tired mom trudged on :-(

I have seen many people nursing in public the past few years...and I
think it is becoming more common. However, most people that I've seen
are usually somewhat discrete about it...they throw a cover or
something over the baby while nursing. Others I've seen, as it sounds
like with the lady in Target, let it all hang out and they don't seem
to have a problem with what others think.

My EDD is October 18, 2003 and though I plan to breastfeed, I don't
think I will be able to feed that openly in public. I'm more likely
to cover Baby with a light blanket while feeding.

I think you just end up doing what feels comfortable for you.
I was a bit shy about NIP at first, but since I have spent vast portions of
every day for the past year with one or both breast out of my shirt, I got
over that. Now I'm at the point where I'm discrete but I still don't
particularly care what others think. (Most people would think I'm just
holding DD unless they could see that my shirt is hitched up - DD covers
everything else anyway). I'll NIP anywhere anytime, but I do prefer a
quiet, out of the way spot as DD is so easily distracted.
Just go with the flow and do what feels comfortable for you :)

I was feeding my month-old baby at the McDonald's playland, and my MIL
hastened to drape a baby blanket over us despite the heat in the room (it's
a giant solarium and it was a sunny day) and the fact that it made it
*harder* for me to get the baby latched. *She* was embarrassed. I was
merely frustrated with having to struggle with the blanket *and* the baby.
In general, I don't bother with trying to act "discreet" as this only draws
attention to what I'm doing. I lift my shirt, get baby latched, tuck my
shirt down, and nobody sees a thing.

While I'm delighted... I think she might be even MORE comfortable if you
referred to it as a breast, not a 'boob.'
(Sorry, but this is a real peeve of mine... why must people refer to them as
'boobs' and 'tits', rather than 'breasts?' Doesn't exactly help with the
acceptance factor...)

That's kind of our pet name, I even used it with Laszlo when he was nursing.
Didn't mean to offend!

If I point to my breast and ask him what it is, he still says "Bobby" - his
way of saying boobie.

Same with us -- I was never fond of the term "boob" or "boobie", but that's
what DH would call it to DS, so that's what DS calls it. He hasn't nursed
in 6 months, but will still occasionally "hug boobie" when he's sitting on
my lap. "I'm hugging the boobie!" is what he says. Then he gives it a
little kiss (through my shirt). I wonder if he'll want to start nursing
again when the new baby is born? He's made no move towards them since he
was weaned, but I bet it will be different once I have milk again.

Jen, want to email me about your website, or is that pretty much on
indefinite hold?
