39w1d decrease in fundal height
 

I saw the doc yesterday and she said that I was 80% effaced and fingertip
dilated. I gather that its not exactly predictive of any certain time for
delivery except that I've had lots of cervical discomfort and strong cramps
on and off for the last two days. I'd say its getting closer anyway.

In any case, she gave me my records to carry around with me to the hospital
and, until this week, my fundal height had corresponded exactly with the
number of weeks pregnant that I am. At 38 weeks I was 38 cm but at the 39
week appointment it decreased to 37 cm. I haven't gained weight in three
weeks either. Do you think this just means that the baby has moved farther
down or should I be concerned about his growth or lack thereof at this time?
She didn't mention it to me so evidently she's not alarmed. It just seemed
strange.

They don't even measure fundal height here in NZ routinely anymore. But
from what I have read on these and other groups, when babies head drops down
into the pelvis your fundal height drops with it. So it may well be that
your baby has engaged between 38 week and now.

absolutely classic, meaning the baby has dropped, growth also does slow down
towards the end, it is said babies put on half a pound a week in the last
few weeks, but I'm not sure that beyond 40 weeks there is much evidence for
that and lots of anecdotal that points in the opposite direction, even when
they are piling on half a pound a week, it's mostly fat and not length, so
it doesn't increase the fundal height in the same way that earlier growth
does.

it makes sense that the baby could have engaged further by now.

Really? I had it measured every time I visited my midwife here in NZ from
about 20 weeks onwards.

Well my experience was limited to my LMC midwife (useless bitch she was so
she was probably lazy) and I was also under the care of a specialist at
Waikato Hospital. She was the one that told me that they NZ hospitals don't
do it as routine because there are so many variables to take into account,
weight gain, babies position etc.

I've also corresponded with NZ midwives who use it regularly, I think that a
tape measure that actually has a slightly more realistic scale than 1cm per
week originated there, because that is actually not very accurate for many
women, so there is some desire for a better way of figuring out when there
is a real concern, rather than automatically worrying when it's a certain
number of cm behind. (Incidently, I've had an IUGR baby who measured spot on
until 32 weeks, then no increase, therefore wasn't at the worry point of 4cm
behind until 36+ weeks, but there being a problem was clear at 34 weeks,
whereas my non IUGR baby was consistently 4cm behind, emphasising that
changes from week to week are probably more important than the absolute
value).

My sister's place up in Yorkshire has charts according to your height which
gives you your expected fundal height. She was way over from early on (and
got bigger)-and had a small (9%) baby. My fundal height ended up about 8cm
too low, but she was about 50%.

It is interesting to me for something that is supposed to be so variable
that I measured *exactly* the same centimeters as weeks from 14 weeks on
until now. It can't be useless in all cases!
