did you mean to use Nicolas, Steven (Stephen) or Robert? i
certainly hope so, because actually naming the poor child with
a diminuative is unkind. it's hard enough to get along in the
adult world without being saddled with a 'baby nickname' as
your given name.

I don't think Nick, Steve, and Bob/Rob are so bad if that is what he
likes as a name. As someone else mentioned - the person can use Steven
as an adult nickname just as easily as the Steven can go by Steve.

I would agree with you if he had suggested a Nicky, Stevey, or Bobby
though. Those names wear out at about age 4 but the ones he had listed
can and do last a life time.

My mother's name was Rosa. Her nickname was Georgia. She even had
Georgia on her driver's license. Very few people outside her family knew
her legal name. It didn't seem to cause her any trouble what so ever.
My cousin (who is my age) is Beth, not Elizabeth. Her mother regrets
that decision but Beth herself never has AFAIK.

I hang out on another group where a mom felt like she named her girls
wrong and so she had them legally changed to something totally different
when they were 6mos old - just up and changed them, lol.

I may be biased though because I have a Luke, not a Lucas.
