Default Do you trust breastfeeding as a reliable form of birth control?

Many articles state that during the first six months of the postpartum period, if you continue to breastfeed regularly and exclusively and your periods do not return, breastfeeding is between 98% and 99% effective as a contraceptive. However, my ob/gyn told me that "breastfeeding is not reliable birth control" and a friend recently conceived during this period.
