Judge Suggests Home Schooling a Cover for PAS
Posted on Mar 28, 2009
"Based on all of the evidence, the court finds that Ms. Mills engaged in
behavior that alienates the minor children from their maternal grandparents,
their aunt, and most importantly their father," Mangum wrote.
In this case, North Carolina Judge Ned Mangum ruled that a mother's desire
to home-school her three children in accordance with the doctrines espoused
by the Sound Doctrine Church was part of an overall plan to deny the
father's access to them (The News & Observer, 3/18/09). Mangum ordered that
the children attend public school and that the father, Thomas Mills, have
equal access to them, including the ability to expose them to his own
religion.

In his order, Mangum quoted former Sound Doctrine members as saying the
church operates by instilling fear in its members. Thomas Mills stated in
an affidavit that, following her introduction to the church, his wife
Venessa stopped communicating with him except to quote scripture and parrot
church teaching.

Mangum found that it was in the children's best interests "that Mr. Mills, a
father with equal rights, should be allowed to expose the children to more
than just the experiences that Venessa Mills desires."
