Default Toddler nursing problem

Quite suddenly, my little guy (28months old now) is having problems
nursing. Its pretty hard to describe in words, but I'll try.

When sucking, he by all outward appearances maintains latch, but every
few sucks, he makes this strange squelching (is that a word?) noise from
inside his mouth, almost like his tongue is losing latch while the rest
of the mouth maintains a good latch - i.e. he's not popping off the
breast, nor does it cause me pain when it happens, but this noise is now
happening every 3rd suck or so, and he gets very frustrated and squirmy
and asks to switch side, and it just keeps going.

It certaintly seems to disrupt him and its also irritating for me -
while there is no pain, the noise is incredibly annoying to me, and
something just feels different when this happens. There is still milk,
as he unlached at one point yesterday and had milk dribble down his
face. We're both getting a little fed up with it I think, and wondering
if anyone has ever experienced this?

I should also mention that he's had a bad cough lately, but has not been
stuffy in the nose, so I don't think its a breathing issue.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
PumpkinMama
