Luke has been a name in it's own right for centuries though. at

According to one web site: Luke has 11 variant forms: Loukas, Luc, Lucas,
Lucian, Lucien, Lucio, Lucius, Luck, Lucky, Lukacs and Lukas. [from:

So, perhaps Luke and Lucas are derived from a common predecessor, or simply
developed similarly in different cultures/languages.
