Aluminium compounds have been widely used as adjuvants in prophylactic
and therapeutic vaccines. Adjuvants are able to stimulate the immune
system in a nonspecific manner, i.e. high antibody level can be
obtained with minimal dose of the antigen and with reduced number of
inoculations.
Local reactions are those at the site of injection. In other words,
it MAY cause some redness, itching, and even soreness. Most local
reactions are fleeting, less than 24 hours. The adjuvant greatly
improves the efficacy of the vaccine. A little itching is a very good
trade off for increased safety & protection.
