Despite the fact that spanking is probably much older than biblical
admonitions, no-spanks operate on the assumption that if they can just
get rid of the Bible, especially a few choice verses in Proverbs, then
spanking will disappear. While not true, recent public opinion poll
data throws cold water on any chance of the Bible disappearing from
America any time soon.

According to a CBS poll, only 15% of Americans believe that evolution
alone, absent divine intervention, explains human life. Those most
likely to believe in evolution are college-educated liberals. Even
there, only about 1/3 actually believes evolution explains the human
race. Most Americans believe God was involved in a process. Those
least likely to believe in evolution were those who go to church.

Gallup found that Americans were more likely to go to church than
Canadians. Americans were also twice as likely to believe that the
Bible was the word of God. (A more recent Rasmussen Reports poll found
almost 2/3 of Americans "believe the Bible is literally true and the
Word of God.") Only 15% of Americans believe the Bible to be totally
fictitious. Canadians were 2X as likely to think so. Americans are
almost 2X as likely as Canadians to be conservative evangelical.

Because of its historic ties to Britain, Canada is more influenced by
Europe than is America. After all, America broke away from Britain,
while Canada did not. Yet, Britain is not wholly European. As its
historic antagonism with France clearly indicates, it feels itself
separated from the Continent. According to a recent informal poll
conducted at an Entente Cordiale art show, 86% of Brits think the
French deserve their negative image. Only 27% of the French thought
Brits felt that way about them. Clearly Britain is not Europe. Nor,
more obviously, is Europe America.

Several European cities have sought to ban Halloween because
traditional Europeans see it as a crude example of crass American
commercialism. European countries less hostile to Halloween are those
with heavy American influences. Examples are Britain and Germany. In
America, it is usually Christian fundamentalists that seek to ban
Halloween!

Meanwhile, European countries are more likely to ban spanking. America
has not done so. Britain and Canada are in the middle. They restrict
spanking, but do not ban it. American states most likely to restrict
spanking to any appreciable degree are classified as liberal. Yet,
over several decades, more Americans self-identify themselves as
conservative rather than as liberal.

Of equal interest is the fact that, with the exception of higher income
brackets, men are no longer flocking to colleges. In particular, large
chunks of the Hispanic influx are opting out of acculturation. The
separatism for Hispanic men includes foregoing higher education. Even
learning English is optional. Yet, in many areas of the country,
Hispanics are the new demographic surge. Most are not self-identified
liberals!

Given the above, even subscribing to the erroneous no-spank argument
that spanking begins and ends with the Bible, it is unlikely that
spanking will disappear as a fact of life for most American children
anytime soon. Christianity merely makes a convenient target for their
considerable frustrations.

So was murder.

No, they simply point out that it's the Old Testament. Haven't you
heard the "good NEWS?"

Show us in the NT where any such punitive attitude toward children
exists please.

On the other hand, being an athiest I don't care what superstition
says, one way or the other.

I gave up trusting the tooth fairy long ago. And there is no Easter
Bunny. Trust me.

Kiddo, I used to create survey instruments. I can, if I wanted, get
anyone to say just about anything I wished...or the organization that
might contract with me wanted.

Don't trust polls.

Certainly not a CBS one, as they are voluntary call in.

"Rasmussen Reports?" Not religiously affiliated, are they? 0:-

Count me in that 15%. In fact I believe there was a person now referred
to as "Jesus" named Yeshua who lived about 2005 years ago and he said
much of what is attributed to him. I do not believe, however, that he
was a god or son of a god.

And I am reasonable sure, since I was a bible student at one time, that
he never said hitting children or even admonishing them was acceptable
or good or taught them anything.

Please show us where He did.

If you were actually a student of these issues you'd know very well
that Judeo/Christianty was an amalgam of what came before it. Even the
Virgin birth myth arose in another culture alongside Judiasm

Logical fallacy. One does not necessarily follow the
other....conservatives can be against spanking. You are working on an
elaborate lie, pretending that only liberals are opposed to spanking.
It's simply not true.

There is resistance against making spanking illegal, but that is a far
cry from being for spanking. I spent nearly my entire adult life being
against spanking and against making it illegal. I know many like me
that do no wish to have more government than is absoluately necessary.

I only changed recently in the face of the stupidity of the compulsives
and apologists stubborn refusal to see what was in front of their
faces...the outcomes, short term and long term, of spanking and
otherwise humiliating children.

brackets, men are no longer flocking to colleges. In particular, large

Things change. I was the first in my family to attend college. Now all
the kids in my family have. Most of us even had advanced degrees. In
ONE short generation.

As for hispanics, once they are here for a time, watch them flock to
higher education. I watched this as a young man...in fact as a teen
ager. Kids I grew up with from families that did not speak english well
or some at all, sent their children to college. Hispanics.

I love how illogical and stupid people can be. How they warp time and
history to their beliefs and how they find outcomes that do not follow
their babbling claims. Most of which are wrong in the first place.

Given the above, even subscribing to the erroneous no-spank argument
that spanking begins and ends with the Bible,

Yet another erroneous belief. How do you explain those of other
religions or none at all that spank?

it is unlikely that
spanking will disappear as a fact of life for most American children
anytime soon.

It will if there is a law passed banning it. And that can happen. There
are many european countries that ban it that have highly diverse
cultures, with large immigrant populations.

Christianity merely makes a convenient target for their
considerable frustrations.

Hardly; as there are many ... I dare say most ... Christians that
question the use of pain and humiliation on children. Only Christian
Conservatives of the fundy persuasion attract our attention, Observer,
among Christians that is.

We have lots of other targets and they are falling rapidly. Take the
school systems.

Hell, even where paddling is still protected by law school district
superintendents are telling their sattelites to NOT use it for fear of
suit.

I like that. It bring the real world to self deluding babbers such as
you.

I'm considering introducing a bill to my state making it legal to sue
one's parents for damages from "spanking," and other forms of
humiliation, just as an adult can sue for such things.

You fools are going to find yourselves in very deep **** before long.
Or recognize that you haven't shovelled yourselves out of your own
spanking beliefs offal and it's up around your neck.

Science is providing more and more clear proofs of what is up with
spanking. And as interest becomes more intense, funding for further
studies will cook the apologists and compulsives collective goose.

You brought it on yourselves. Defending the assault of children by
calling it by another name. And pretending it is non damaging and
"teaches."

Shame on you...............R R R R R R R
