Fix Drug Safety Warning System says National Academies of Sciences (USA)
The National Academies of Science made several recommendations that to help
fix the safety warning system. Read the press release he http://www8.nationalacademies.org/on...RecordID=11750 Or the full Report (you have to pay to buy the book, but you can read it for free online): http://www.nap.edu/catalog/11750.html The recommendations include: Labeling requirements and advertising limits for new medications Clarified authority and additional enforcement tools for the agency Clarification of FDA's role in gathering and communicating additional information on marketed products' risks and benefits Mandatory registration of clinical trial results to facilitate public access to drug safety information An increased role for FDA's drug safety staff A large boost in funding and staffing for the agency From what I have read, these recommendations are right on. I hope Congress takes this up with the new Congress (the present Congress is trying to get reelected, so no action is expected until next year). I also wish they would limit the way drug companies can advertise. Jeff |
