A new law will let you find out about the most serious cases. It's called the
child welfare open records law. Starting Thursday, child abuse and neglect
deaths or near deaths will be public.

The legislature passed the bill this past session. A 2003 child abuse death in
Kansas City, Kansas sparked the bill.

Nine-year-old Brian Edgar of Kansas City, Kansas was killed, and his adopted
parents were charged with murdered. They also had been his foster parents.

A Kansas City area state senator introduced the bill. The SRS secretary says
she supports the open records.

"We favor the openness of they system; we think they child welfare system is
critical enough, that folks ought to have the opportunity to look at it and
have folks take a second look at it to see if they think the system is
working," said Janet Schalansky.
