Slain children remembered at memorial service

Jamie Hallum read Ariana and Tyler Payne's favorite storybook,
"Goodnight Moon," to them one last time at a somber memorial service for
her dead children Saturday evening.

Her voice broke with emotion as she stood before about 45 mourners -
including paternal grandfather John Payne, whose son Christopher is
charged with killing them.

The service, at Adair Funeral Homes Avalon Chapel, 8090 Northern Ave.,
was led by Pastor Steve Main of Northwest Community Friends Church, 5950
N. La CaƱada Drive.

Hallum and Christopher Payne were divorced June 16, 2003. She was
granted sole custody of the children, with no visitation rights for
Payne, because of his history of arrests on charges of domestic violence.

However, in 2006, she permitted the children to stay with their father
so they could get to know their new half-brother.

On March 9, 2006, Payne refused to return Ariana and Tyler to her. A
Child Protective Services worker told Tucson police to leave the
children with Payne.

Ariana's body was found Feb. 18, 2007, in a Tucson storage locker. She
suffered multiple bone fractures, including 12 broken ribs, a Pima
County forensic medical examination showed. She was 4.

The death was ruled a homicide.

Tyler's body has not been found and authorities presume the 5-year-old
is dead. Ariana's remains had been cremated.

Main called on the community to give the family "some of your time, some
of your heart" in the days to come.

"Listen to them. Sit with them," he said. "Let them cry."
Main said the deaths of Ariana and Tyler "remind us how fragile children
are, how much they need our love and care.

"Who is to blame?" he asked. "We'll let the legal system deal with that."

Hallum filed a $12 million claim on Aug. 16 against the state and the
city of Tucson, accusing Child Protective Services and the Tucson Police
Department of negligence in the children's deaths.

According to Hallum's wrongful death claim, Payne had been arrested for
domestic violence against her during both of the children's pregnancies.
"Lord, we're sorry that their life was cut short," Main told mourners.
"Bless this family and surround them with your love.

"Smile every time you see a child. Let them know they're loved. Reach
out to parents. Understand their struggles."

Main spoke about the impact of the deaths.
"The whole southern Arizona community has been touched by your loss," he
said. "Both of these children were gifts of joy and love."

He remembered Tyler as a boy who loved baking cookies with his mother
and pretended to be Spiderman.

He remembered Ariana as a girl who loved coloring and carried a book bag
around, with her favorite coloring books and her crayons.
"We share your pain," Main told the family.

He urged the community to "nurture and love children. Be ever diligent
for their safety and share in the load that parents carry."
A slide show captured the children in party hats enjoying their birthday
cakes, playing in a wading pool and hugging each other.
Then Hallum lit a candle in their memories and set it on a table at the
front of the chapel.

On either side of the candle were mementos of the children: Tyler's
Scooby-Doo doll, a pair of boots, and one of Ariana's baby dolls.
Floral arrangements decorated the chapel.
Doves were released in pairs by Hallum and other family members and
friends before the service, as the sun began to set.
After the service, Hallum, John Payne and other relatives and friends
embraced and wept.

Payne and his girlfriend, Reina Gonzales, 23, who is also charged with
two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths, remain in the Pima
County jail on more than $1 million bond each, awaiting trial.

The Pima County Attorney's office said it will seek the death penalty
for Payne and Gonzales. No date has been set for the trial.
