IMO, I don't think I'd do an IUD for only 18-20 months. You *can*, but I
think it is meant to be a longer term method. Also, I know finances are an
issue for you, but certain insurance companies don't cover the device,
only the insertion and removal. IIRC, the device will be about $300.

!!!!! Do you make IUDs out of solid platinum in the US, or what?? They're
about £7 - 9 over here.

I imagine that that figure includes the cost of the device plus consultation
with the doctor, fitting etc. which are not covered in the raw 7pounds for
the device cost. It's still quite a difference though.

The price for the device for "older versions" of the IUD, like the copper T,
is maybe $60 retail. The Mirena is closer to $500 retail.

It has to do with drug patents, etc... when there's a generic version (if
there's a generic version) it will be much cheaper.

I found the price for the Mirena in the BNF eventually. It was tucked
away somewhere else (not in the contraceptive devices/intrauterine
devices section with the others). The Mirena costs the NHS £98 (or
just short of $200) so still less than half the price you quote!

American drug prices are outrageous, because the pharmeceutical companies
can get away with it. Its as simple as that.
