I was momentarily confused there and wondered how we could check
rabbity counting skills!

And if you've read Watership Down you'll know that rabbits can count to
four but anything over is 'five' (in the manner of 'many' among
trolls). g

Observation of rabbits actually does seem to indicate that they can
count. But whether they can do calculus is another matter.

Well, I did think of that but not for long.

If they're anything like me they can't.

Default Hamster bites?

The email I received today was from a vet and perhaps she'll be willing to
go into more detail on it but there are hamsters in the US that carry it and
they can be tested for it. And it's carried by rodents so any other type of
hamster, if exposes, probably wouldn't be an exception.

I know that there is something that hamsters carry, I looked into it when I
was pregnant with my son because someone had mentioned it. It's only a
specific type of hamster (I think some type of Asian dwarf hamster) and not
ones bred in the US.

Don't sweat it, it's VERY rare if possible at all.

I read somewhere that hamsters can carry a virus that's dangerous to
pregnant women. Does anybody know anything about this? We recently bought
two hamsters and one of them did bite me. Though it has long since healed,
I'm still a little concerned.

I also updated my website with pictures of our pets, ect. There's a guest
book if anybody would like to leave messages. http://jodypellerin.ath.cx/

Hi all--

I'm the vet who responded to Jody. I just didn't want to post to
Usenet from work.

Mice and hamsters are susceptible to the virus (lymphocytic
choriomeningitis virus or LCMV). Rabbits and other rodents are not.
Jody's link in one of her prior messages is a good source of
information. The disease is not common, either among humans or
animals, but it is a risk and it has been known to cause problems in
human pregnancies. There have been outbreaks of LCMV in humans caused
by exposure to pet-shop hamsters.

The zoonosis in question is lymphocytic choriomeningitis. I don't do a lot
of hamster work so I'm not up on the incidence, treatment, risks, etc. I
would talk to your veterinarian about it (call first to warn him or her!
) as well as your obstetrician.

When she found out about Isobel is about when I started lurking too! I
wonder how she's doing these days?

LOL talk about preggo brain, I had to read Jacqui's post before I even
understood what you were on about Linz...
Actually many rabbits are smarter than a lot of dogs, and very social. I
wouldn't be surprised if my Flemish Giant's maths skills are better than
mine. It's a proven fact that birds however, can only count to one.

Default Hamster bites?

Hi;

I too have hamsters, but ever since I found out about my pregnancy I let
my husband handle them.

Well, the problem is not toxioplasmosis. This is a disease which you can
acquire from any animal. Rodents on the other hand can pass on a disease
called Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus (LCMV)

So, you better go as soon as possible to check yourself.

Here is what I found online:
Pregnant women should be cautious about contact with pet hamsters, wild
or laboratory mice according to a study by Leslie Barton, M.D.,
professor of Pediatrics and pediatric infectious disease specialist at
the University of Arizona, published in the August 1 edition of Clinical
Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Barton, along with colleagues around the world, have reported that
when pregnant women come in contact with rodents carrying a disease
called Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus (LCMV), it can damage the
developing fetus.

To read more about this go to:

Hi. You may be thinking of toxoplasmosis, which can be passed by
rodents, but I am not sure how. In cats it is passed in the feces.
Since I have 2 cats I have read a lot about it, and have never read
anything about it being passed by biting, or anything cautioning
pregnancy women against caring for lil rodent pets (although I would
probly have someone else clean the cage), but I guess you should ask
your doctor.

I think Rabbits are under the rodent family, don't you think so?

No, they are not. They are lagomorphs.
