Unable to breastfeed

I just had surgery a few days ago and I am looking at a 4-6 week recovery. I am in pain all the time it seems and on meds to help with it, but I find I cannot seem to nurse Bella at all. I try despite how uncomfortable I am, but I cannot keep it up, as much as I would like. I tried feeding her laying down. Shes a squirmer and a wiggler and she kicks me, and I cannot have her doing that. Sitting up right now and feeding her that was is next to impossible. As I am on as most bed rest for the 1st week or 2 that I can get. She wont take the bottle. She does have her sippy cup. If we try any type of formula she will not take it, she does not drink milk, soy milk , any kind of milk. She drinks some water and some watered down juice, but not alot. Her 10 oz juice cup will last her all day. I am not sure what I can do. She wants to be breastfeed and its so hard knowing I cannot do it. I have tried pumping and well, its not working at all. Laura ((((((Laura)))))) Can you get into a semi-sitting position? I have one of those bed "chair-pillows" that you can get at Wal-mart or Sears for 15 bucks. If you use one of those plus a whole bunch of pillows for extra support (under your knees, behind your head, etc) it might be a bit more comfortable. That's how I slept for the first week and a half after the c-section. As to Bella kicking you, can you have her in the football hold and then place a pillow between your body and her lower half? She could lay on pillows to support her. I realize this calls for a lot of pillows, but you can always use more pillows, IMO. ;-) -- Brigitte aa #2145 http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/j/joshuaandkaterina/ http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/i/isabellazora/ "Readers are plentiful; thinkers are rare." ~ Harriet Martineau |

Maybe try putting a small pillow between you when you are laying down, like
a sofa-throw pillow. This is how my sister breastfed her beby after csection, and after surgery to remove gallbladder. Baby can still kick pillow! Not as snuggly this way, bu tmay be a temporary solution. Hopefully your pain will lessen within a week or so, and you can slowly try other positions again. Hope this helps, and sending speedy recovery vibes!! Dena, mommy to Melissa 6.9.94, ^Matthew^ 4.23thru27.99, Hailey 6.11.01, and Zachary 8.20.03 "Laura & Bella" wrote in message .. . .. . Brigitte I have a hard time trying to sit up. I lie down alot, usually on my back, getting onto my side hurts way to much. If i can get into a semi sitting position I cannot stay like it for too long Not long enough to feed her. I could try the football hold and see how she does with that. Thanks Brigitte..I will try just about anything right now that works..otherwise I have one cranky baby here in this house. It will be better in a day or two - can't you take some kind of pain meds? I remember when having c-secs (twice) that the first two-three days were horrible, but then it got better. Tine, Denmark |

I don't know if it would help, but I find lying flat and having T almost across my shoulders (lying across me but above rather than below the nipple) helps when I have ?gallbladder/stomach? pain (being investigated now). No pressure on anything below my ribcage, although I do need to hold him carefully to avoid him kicking/punching me in the throat (he's also a wriggler). He's also old enough, at 8 months, to kneel next to me when I can't turn on to my side, and he enjoys that - he'll crawl up to me while I'm asleep and pounce. :-) Jac |

I don't mean to be crass but this description is the best I can think of: How about a 69 position? You on your side with feet going North and Bella on her side but feet going South. You would need to cram pillows behind your back for support and kind of scooch down the bed to give her a bit of room. This position will also stop the kicking (or she can kick the head board). Or if you can't get on your side and you are on your back, try having her nurse from the top (still 69). -- Brigitte aa #2145 http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/j/joshuaandkaterina/ http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/i/isabellazora/ "Readers are plentiful; thinkers are rare." ~ Harriet Martineau |

I did not have a c-section, my daughter is 14 months old Then I'd definitely try having her kneel or sit by your side - you might need to experiment with pillows to get a good position. It would depend on the height of the bed, a chair she sits on if you have her by the side of the bed, the - ahem - size of your breasts, but I'd think you could probably get her to cooperate reasonably well, I can do it with an 8 month old (he kneels or sprawls across the bed next to me). I understood that it was another kind of surgery and that your daughter was older. In a way it makes it harder for you and her - she knows what she wants and can't get. Tine, Denmark |
