Woman Accused In Child's Death Held On $5 Million Bail

VISTA, Calif. -- An Oceanside woman suspected of fatally beating her
4-year-old foster daughter will remain in custody on $5 million bail
pending a Monday arraignment, a judge ruled Thursday.

Dania Yesenia Haros, 23, is accused in the killing of Angelina Espalin
on Nov. 19, 2006.

She is suspected of beating Angelina the night before she and her
husband took the child to a hospital.

Angelina, for whom Haros had cared for six months, had "significant
brain swelling" and was pronounced dead at Rady Children's Hospital,
Deputy District Attorney Kelly Mok said.

The girl had "multiple" bruises on her face and body, as well as 30
hemorrhages to her scalp. She died of blunt force trauma, Mok said.

Authorities investigated the case for about a year before Haros was
arrested on Monday, Mok said.

Haros "ultimately admitted to assaulting the victim," the prosecutor said.

Mok told Vista Superior Court Judge Adrienne Orfield the defendant and
her husband were preparing to move to Mexico when she was arrested.

The judge set a Monday hearing for Haros to enter pleas on charges of
murder and assault on a child resulting in death.

S'te Elmore, Angelina's previous foster mother, said after the short
hearing that she was "shocked and horrified" at the allegations.

"Angie was beautiful, outgoing, very outspoken," Elmore said. "She loved
life, loved people. I can't imagine what Angie went through and why
anybody would do that to her. It's just unimaginable."
