Default Gerber Lil Meals - with the metal ring

Stupid question. I've always made DD's food so have never used these
before. I decided to try them out as they could be useful when
travelling. The directions say to pull of the metal top and replace
the plastic lid then microwave. However, there's still a metal ring
around the edge of the container.

Is that supposed to come off too? It doesn't seem to budge. Or is it
made from some special material that it can be nuked? I ended up
transferring to another bowl, but obviously that's not practical on a
plane ;-)

If the amount of metal is small relative to the amount of other
matter, especially liquid, the metal can be microwaved without damage
to anything. So don't worry about the metal ring.

I routinely microwave a stack of thick earthenware plates; a few
minutes' zap warms them nicely, and they keep our dinners warm just a
little longer. The plates are made from a pink clay; the pink
probably is due to a moderately high iron content.

On an airplane I would serve jar food at room temperature. I would
*not* ask an attendant to zap my baby's food, nor accept if they offer
to do it. I know most will do it, and warm bottles too, but there is
just too much stomach flu going around.

Perhaps the safest way to warm baby food is to put the container
inside your shirt and let it warm to your body temperature.

Only the top comes off. The rest goes in the microwave. Those things are
great. It was the only babyfood I could get DS to eat.

The plastic lid covers the metal ring on the edge of the container, so the
microwaves do not affect it.

I hope she likes them. She's such a food snob, last time we travelled
I tried to get her to eat jarred food and she absolutely refused. As
it is she insists on using utensils to eat rather than fingers most of
the time. I keep saying it's the European in her. I just need
enough to get her through the first couple of days til we can go
shopping.

Microwaves are made better than they used to. That amount of metal is not a
problem.

Good thing we have a new microwave then....until a few weeks ago I was
still using one purchased in 1987. Everything made it spark.
