Default Unlatching

Jacqui writes:
: T (five weeks now) has suddenly started to be troublesome when it comes
: to unlatching - he latches without a problem*, feeds for ten-twenty
: minutes without coming off at all, then starts to play with the nipple.
: He will stretch his neck back, elongating it, without letting go at all
: (ouch!), then come back in, and move back just a little so that he only
: has the nipple, which he rolls over his gums (ouch again) for a minute
: or so. Obviously if I catch him at the beginning of this I can unlatch
: him myself, but since we nurse in bed a lot sometimes I'm too sleepy to
: stop him before he gets to the rolling stage. And it hurts like hell! I
: don't really want to start having to unlatch him myself every time, he
: gets very cranky when I do have to interrupt him and takes forever to
: get latched back on if he turns out to still be hungry. He doesn't like
: being burped mid-feed, either, although he's fine being burped when *he
: thinks* he's finished. Any ideas on how I can get him to unlatch
: properly again?

: * He still headbutts/grabs the nipple when the breast is too full/hard,
: but that's happening very rarely now, I seem to have moved to the 'soft
: breasts' stage already. When I try to relatch him after an interruption
: he goes back to this behaviour too, but gets the hang of it again much
: quicker.

Given your comments above, I can't say anything about WHEN, but I CAN
say something about HOW. Maybe when you unlatch this way, he will
consideer it more 'play' and not object so much, since he is playing
already.

When he starts to play take his head and press his face softly into
your breast. He will open his mouth to breathe. When he does this
simply lift him off the breast. Quick and easy. I don't know if he will
object to being unlatched this way or not, but it is worth a try.
