Jessica Silveira is a “wonderful mother” and her live-in boyfriend a
regular Mr. Rogers around kids, at least according to the couple’s
family and friends.
Of course, how Silveira’s 3-year-old daughter ended up mauled and
disfigured - by a human, allegedly that same live-in boyfriend, Bryan
James - is a total mystery to those folks.
But frankly we shouldn’t look to maddeningly impassive neighbors
and friends to explain how a little girl could allegedly be bitten and
mutilated for months, even after someone notified authorities that she
might be a victim of abuse.


No, that explanation simply must come from the Department of Social
Services and its newly-minted commissioner, Angelo McClain, who is about
to undergo a baptism by fire.
That’s because DSS received its first report of abuse against the
little girl back in January.
But it wasn’t until May, after she was brought to Children’s
Hospital Boston with bite wounds so severe they cost her part of her
upper lip and one ear, that the child and her brother were removed from
the home.
Never will we underestimate the ability of an abusive parent to
lie, and lie this “wonderful mother” allegedly did, according to New
Bedford police, to cover up her boyfriend’s alleged assault.
“The detective . . . noticed a pattern developing in regards to
keeping the assault from DSS as well as other health care workers,”
police said in a statement.
But sadly, given the agency’s track record, the public doesn’t have
much reason to be confident in the DSS response. If we’re wrong, then a
detailed accounting of the response to this gruesome case - and a
thorough explanation from the man who took over after the merciful
ouster of hapless Harry Spence - will say so.
If the allegations by police and prosecutors prove true, then it is
Jessica Silveira and Bryan James who must be held to account for preying
on an innocent child. But DSS certainly has some explaining to do, too.

It is sickening how many children are subject to abuse, neglect and even
killed at the hands of Child Protective Services.

Imagine that, 6.4 children die at the hands of the very agencies that
are supposed to protect them and only 1.5 at the hands of parents per
100,000 children. CPS perpetrates more abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse
and kills more children then parents in the United States. If the
citizens of this country hold CPS to the same standards that they hold
parents too. No judge should ever put another child in the hands of ANY
government agency because CPS nationwide is guilty of more harm and
death than any human being combined. CPS nationwide is guilty of more
human rights violations and deaths of children then the homes from which
they were removed. When are the judges going to wake up and see that
they are sending children to their death and a life of abuse when
children are removed from safe homes based on the mere opinion of a
bunch of social workers.
