Default going out with baby

i am still a bit worried about going out with our 3wk old. i would
like to go shopping but am concerned the air con levels at the mall
are too cold.

am i being irrational? and is a month old baby significantly at more
risk to draughts and infections than say an 8 month old baby?

if i take put a digital thermometer in the buggy what temperature
range should i try to maintain?

thx

Then bring a blanket ;-)

It's fine, particularly if the baby is breastfed and
getting the benefit of all those antibodies. With a very young
baby, you might want to be a little judicious about settings
that are more likely than usual to be problematic (airplanes,
hospitals, clinic waiting rooms when there's not a separate
sick room, etc.), but even in places like that, odds are
things will be just fine. My babes were all out and about
early and often with no problems whatsoever. Especially with
second and subsequent babies, it's not like you can stop the
world for the other kids so that the new baby doesn't get
exposed to anything!

That's waaaaaay beyond what you need to do. The old
rule of thumb is for baby to be in one more light layer than
you are comfortable in, and a little blanket will take care
of that. Most babies will get fussy if they're too hot or
cold and you'll adjust as needed.

Best wishes,
Ericka

Um, I went to the mall when my first born was 3 days old. If it's cold,
bring a blanket. Too warm, pull some of the layers off.

Well a little. The baby isn't going to break. They are not as fragile as you
think they are. Unless the infant has other issues going on, they are fine
to go out into the public. I would avoid super busy places like Ericka
mentioned, but if the baby is in a sling or the stroller then no one can
really get to her.

That's over the top and you don't need to do that. The general rule of thumb
is dress the baby as you are dressed with one extra layer, just in case you
need to remove something if she/he gets too hot.

Well yesterday I took my 8 hour baby into school and preschool. Lots of
cuddles for him and I don't think he's suffering as a result.

Don't bother you'll only worry yourself if you're trying to do that.

Yes, you are being slightly irrational. : )

Just put baby in a footed long sleeve sleeper and have a couple light
blankets available for layering. If it seems REALLY cold, add a blanket.
But most malls would be air conditioned to about 68-70, I'd guess, which is
not exceedingly cold, and wouldn't require anything more than normal
clothing.

A good key to remember is that if it feels chilly to you and you want a
light sweater, then that's all baby likely needs. It's not like if it's
comfortable to you in short sleeves that baby needs to be uber-bundled up.

I took my 5 day old baby out and about shopping. She was fine. I flew home
with her at 10 days old, she was fine. : )

Odd. I remember with DD2, I was out and about the day we came home from the
hospital.
My mom dropped me off at home when we left the hospital. We spent a bit of
time lazing around at home, visiting with older siblings and Dad, then I was
off and out the door to do some shopping as we *needed* a new car seat (the
one we had was too big and wouldn't fit in the back seat of the car with DS
and DD1 in there at the same time) I was off and out trying to find the
skinniest car seat that was available.
DD1 was also a day old when I had to run to the mall for pads. DH came home
from the store with panty liners for me, and that just wouldn't work a day
after the baby was born. When DS was born, he was 2 days old before I was
back at my class in school - I just had the one class, but he came along
with me from the day he was 2 days old.
DD was born end of Jan, DD1 was born beginning of Aug and DD2 was born
towards the end of October. If it wasn't weather for A/C, it was weather
with snow.

IIRC, you're breastfeeding, aren't you? That right there helps with baby's
immune system. Even if you aren't, baby should have some immunity, if it's
a major concern. If you're concerned about the baby being too cold, bring
an extra blanket. I don't think you're being irrational, maybe just your
thoughts are a bit obnoxious and unnecessary. If you find it's too cold for
you, then the baby is probably too cold, and in this case, a blanket is
enough. Your baby will let you know if it's too hot or too cold, too
hungry, too lonely, too whatever. Babies are good at letting people know
when it's not right for them.
