Default Wonderful technology

In general, I prefer -- and am lucky enough to still have the privilege of --
face-to-face communication with my son. But today, after he started middle
school and handled his first night of homework, getting organized, etc -- all
on just a couple of hours sleep because he was so excited last night, I was
grateful for the anonymity and frankness of instant messaging.

Henry had gone up to his room to get ready for bed (where he has a laptop) and
I was catching up on e-mail. Suddenly an instant message popped up from him:
"hi mom"

I answered: "Hi sweetie. I'm so proud of you today. I hope you know that."

To which I got three quick replies:

i do.
thanks.
i love u.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Off to bed now, once I wipe away a tear or two.

*seconds the Awwwwww*

I can't wait for text messaging on the cell phone myself when Ian goes
off to school one day. *sigh* It seems like forever until that happens
although I have the feeling it won't looking back on it all.
