Default Names of the children I went to school with

I started kindergarten in 1943. I was thinking of the names of the kids I
went to school with, and I think there were some unusual names then as
well. From memory:

Girls - my best friend was

Patty (Patricia) and her other best girlfriend was
Scott. I totally never thought that Scott is usually a boy's name.

Marilese was my principal competitor as she was much better in math than I
was. (I think it was a contraction of Mary Louise. I'm not sure whether
it was like my cousin's real given name which was Mariby - a contraction of
Mary Barbara or if it was a nickname.)

Ruth (also better than me in math)
Louise
Lois
Sandra
Carol
twins Gay and Gwen
Susan
Claire
Sarah

Boys:
Cator (I think a family name)
Davey whose real name was Davis after Jefferson Davis
Billy (was killed driving drunk coming home from the prom in HS)
Kit (Christopher)
Bobby
Van
Albert
Charles
Lawrence
John Guy (his dad's name was Guy which was his grandmother's maiden name)
Kenneth
H.M. (stood for Howard Milton)

My best friend's name was Patty/Patricia too. But all the other girls
were named Linda, Kathy or Debbie. (started K 1959)

Heh. I started kindy in...1974. My best friends in school were named:

Hillary (most popular name - there were a bunch of us!)
Monica
Melissa
Joy
Sharon
Stacey (Anastasia Athene, actually!)
Karen
Kristen
David
Stephen
Robert

I also vividly remember Eddie, who was killed by a drunk driver in high
school.

My mom's name is Lois (she's your age). I remember being about five
years old and asking her if her name had been Lois when she was a
little girl -- it seemed like a name only for adults.

I started kindergarten in 1984. I don't remember everyone, but I remember
1st grade pretty vividly (its when we moved from California back to
Virginia)
We had
2 Tabithas
3 Amys - Amy H, Amy N and Amy C
Me, Denise
My best friend Brad
Allison
Jennifer
Jessica
Heather S and Heather H
Courtney
Jacob

That's all I can remember, I'm sure there were others. But my school life
was dominated by Amy's and Heather's, didn't meet another Denise till my
junior year, there was a freshman named Deneice.

I'm sorry, I have to go lie down now. I'm suddenly feeling very decrepit

I try very hard when I post to not let it known how old I am. I respect my
elders, I don't want to make you all feel bad. I could have just posted
the names and you probably would have been able to figure out the year,
anyhow.

Be well, Barbara (who started kindergarten in 1969)
(Julian [6], Aurora [4], and Vernon's [18mo] mom)

This week's special at the English Language Butcher Shop:
"She rose her eyebrows at Toby" -- from "O' Artful Death", by Sarah Stewart
Taylor

Daddy: You're up with the chickens this morning.
Aurora: No, I'm up with my dolls!

All opinions expressed in this post are well-reasoned and insightful.
Needless to say, they are not those of my Internet Service Provider, its
other subscribers or lackeys. Anyone who says otherwise is itchin' for a
fight. -- with apologies to Michael Feldman
