Epiphyseal injury and weightlifting

I wasn't a football player, so I can't say for sure, but as I recall, they were in the weight room no less than three mornings per week (supervised). They were "encouraged" to supplement their supervised weight training with additional (unsupervised) sessions on the other two mornings and occasionally in the afternoons. Ah, okay, sounds like a "serious" lifting program, all right! There are rules in place that prohibit the coaches from working with the kids more than a certain number of hours per week, so they had the kids do much of their weightlifting on the kids' time. Obviously, there was someone watching the whole process, but that person wasn't supposed to do more than keep the kids from hurting themselves by doing the exercises improperly. Okay, "serious" in terms of time logged, "ad hoc" in terms of "strategic vision".... I'd say that the first string varsity guys probably spent no less than 8 hours a week in strength and conditioning exercises of one form or another. I wonder how one could design a study into the effects of serious weight-training on height...seems like the only way to do something definitive is to analyze a hundred pairs of teenage twins who were put on the same program! Say, whatever happened to your interesting question about "scuba gas" possibly affecting height in kids?? ANYONE FROM REC.SCUBA OUT THERE??? |
