Celebrate Siblings Day
Celebrating sisterhood and brotherhood globally is among the most
marvelous ideas ever! It makes sense on that day, and the next day and all days ever after. Thank You for such a concept! |

Thank You for such a concept! Cha-CHING! Another Hallmark holiday for the merchants to love! Having recently been diagnosed with cancer, I have recently reconnected with one of my sisters. Our relationship was not horrid, but it definitely had/has some residue from the past. I don't think that suggesting a global sisterhood/brotherhood celebration is necessarily something to criticize if it has the potential to remind some people that siblings really do have and can have a positive impact on our lives. Perhaps it will help others without a cancer diagnosis, to connect. Yeah, Hallmark might make some money from it....but then again, I'm sure plenty of people support their family by working for Hallmark. And no, I don't work for Hallmark or any company that is associated with this holiday :-) I'm just another person, diagnosed with cancer, who REALLY appreciates the kind cards that have been sent to me lately. I've typically been cynical about Hallmark holidays...but suddenly, due to my circumstances, a lot of my cynicism has turned into appreciation. |

But reconnecting with your sister didn't need a Hallmark holiday, did it. If anything, these things allow people to *think* they've made connections by going through shallow prescribed motions. I really think I'm not the only person burned out on that sort of stuff. But this is exactly the sort of sentiment merchants love - if one doesn't follow up with $$$, they're not being appreciative of the people they love doncha know. Guilt works just fine. Banty |

If anything, these things allow people to *think* they've made connections by going through shallow prescribed motions. I'm sure this isn't true for "everyone", perhaps for some. I really think I'm not the only person burned out on that sort of stuff. Unfortunately, finding out that I had cancer is what did it. I see nothing wrong with an event, a reminder or a suggestion of a holiday to remind "adults" that despite past baggage, having an adult, sibling relationship can be a good thing. More clearly, if it takes a darn holiday that involves cards; so what? Like you, I was burned out too, but as they say "**** happens" and our minds do and can change. Witness how Grandparents' Day never caught on. And it's not because people dont' love their grandparents, or don't have life-changing events that make them appreciate their Grandparents more. It's easy for folks to come up with "Appreciate Your ____ Day", and lordy knows for every entity that could fill in that blank, if one dares to object, he or she's held up as some kind of heartless cynic. Guilt is a powerful force, easy to drum up. So these things get proposed, lots of sappy or not-so-sappy sentiment is voiced, legislatures may even pass laws, 'cause no one wants to be an evul meanie (I guess I don't mind...), then folks proceed to by and large ignore these silly commemorations. But this is exactly the sort of sentiment merchants love - if one doesn't follow up with $$$, they're not being appreciative of the people they love doncha know. Guilt works just fine. The cards have helped me Banty. And yes, it can also be a phone call, an email, a post in a newsgroup, or a knock on my front door. Whatever form of reaching out my support system has done thus far, have all been appreciated. It doesn't have to cost money and if it did, that's not a bad thing either. ?? Are you speaking of your cancer diagnosis, or the Siblings Day subject? Banty |

Not to rain on your parade, but what, apart from the mention of siblings, has this to do with the discussion of genealogy? Would you please confine your cross-posting to relevant groups and exclude alt.genealogy? Thank you very much. -- Robert G. Sue wrote: "MsLiz" wrote in message Having recently been diagnosed with cancer I'm sorry to hear this MsLiz. Do you mind telling what kind of cancer? -- Sue (mom to three girls) Thanks for caring/asking. I"m pretty open about it, it's the way that I deal best with crises. I have thyroid cancer. Having been on a learning curve for the last two months, yeah, it's "the good cancer, the one you want if you have to get cancer." Thank you, I'd prefer no cancer. And....it was found quite by accident. I had horrid neck pains that turned out to be osteoarthrtitis ( let it go for about 4 months before finally visiting my GP, being sure that my neck hurt due to the stress of extra work). In the xray of my neck, they found an enlarged thyroid. One thing led to another from ultrasound to biopsy to endocrinologist and surgeon suggesting removing a peach sized tumor. Turns out there was cancer in the growth and a few other nodules had a bit of cancer too. Next up is radioactive iodine treatment and an insane couple of months ahead of me. I'll stick to my guns and let anyone who reads this thread know that suddenly, I like the cards that I'm getting from friends, neighbors and family. Due to cancer, I've reconnected with a sister and some long lost friends. It's my belief, that PERHAPS with what many consider to be silly holidays like grandparents day, sibling day or take your kid to school day.....maybe, just maybe, family and friends might make a connection other than a cancer diagnosis. Again, thanks for asking. Give your 3 girls an extra hug today. You just never know. |
