It'll be cognitive psychology if I'm one of the "chosen few" selected for grad school. If not, I'll be a secretary with a great education. :-) LOL! Right now I'm a typist with a great education :-) Nice to give my brain a rest actually. lm |

I'm avoiding that paper because it needs to be converted from normal people speak to snooty formal style and my converter program is on the blink. 'Kate Yeah, I'm procrastinating right now... *whines* I don't wanna write my paper. This term has snuck up on me... Christine |

Hello - Kate
Kate, though being a secretary with a great education is just as
admirable , I wish you luck on being one of the chosen few! Sounds very interesting! I hope to one day go back and get a master's in either school psych or an area of soc. (I minored in both psych and soc) Good luck to both you and Christine with those papers. When I turned in my last paper, I -honest to God- did a little dance around that room! |

I'm writing one on adolescent bereavement and resilience, another on the dynamics of the family, dysfunction, and the effect on children and adolescents. 'Kate I'm working on 3. For my Sociology of Killing class I'm writing about female serial murder (which isn't well known, but very fascinating... don't worry, I'm not researching their tactics. lol) The other is the cultural genocide of Native peoples in Canada, using Residential schools as a means to an end, for my Native Studies class. The other is how Criminology is gender biased and how that contributes to the lack of research on female crime and the implications that has for female offenders within the Criminal Justice System for my Women and Science course. Eeek, I should get crackin, term is almost over. Christine |

Hello - Kate
'Kate wrote in message ... On Thu, 20 Nov 2003 04:35:57 GMT, "CME" I'm working on 3. For my Sociology of Killing class snip Christine Say what? Missed that the first time. How do they think up these classes? A whole semester devoted to killing? 'Kate Yeah, it's the most interesting class I've taken since I started University. It's a 400 level seminar course on the different types of killing... infanticide, serial murder, lynching, war, capital punishment etc. Here's a snippet from my syllabus: "'Thou Shalt Not Kill' appears to be one of our great social universals. Closer inspection reveals that there are many instances when killing is not only approved, but socially sanctioned and encouraged. This 4th year seminar course will investigate the sociological implications of various approaches to the act of killing other human beings. By examining the diversity of killing, we will explore assorted sociological questions. These include whether 'society' serves to constrain a human tendency to kill, or, alternately, how social forces can transform otherwise normal individuals into killers. ... This course uses the act of killing other human beings as an entree into exploring a host of sociological questions about culture, power, deviance, and the extremes of human conduct." Some of the things I've read about: The Rape of Nanking, the murder of street children in Brazil by Death Squads (police), Corporate killing (ie: The Pinto and the cost analysis that was done), Hitmen and other 'professionals', The Holocaust and Modernity, Rwanda, Cults, and virtual killings (ie: Video games, paintball)... the list goes on and on. I'd have to say the most challenging aspect of this course, was to remove yourself from your emotions so that you could read about some pretty graphic events and the description of what went on (especially to innocent children).
