Today as I drove to the store, I looked in the care next to me and saw a kid
who had to be no more than 3 with a big old purple plastic gerber bottle
hanging out of her mouth. UGH. People complain about breastfeeding but NOT
about kids with bottles dangling from between their teeth?
And, now that I think about it, why was she in the front seat of a car
anyway???

People complain about toddlers with bottles, too.

Isn't that illegal having a child of that age in the front seat? My husband
laughs at me because I've always said that my kids will be 12 before I let
them sit in the front seat. Especially because we have passenger side
airbags.

Well, I don't hear much complaining about breastfeeding, but I have to say
that my older DD, who not once in her life took a bottle, *loves* to give my
younger DD (age 22 months or so), who took a few bottles when I was battling
thrush, a baby bottle of water. And the younger DD thinks it's just a hoot.
And once or twice she's insisted on taking her ba-ba into the car ...

IOW, I see your point, but it might not be the least bit repugnant. Plus,
I'd expect weaning from bottle or paci might be as much of a challenge as
weaning from the breast can be.

And, now that I think about it, why was she in the front seat of a car
anyway???

Now *this* is the part that scares and disgusts me!

I hear this a lot. But just to play devil's advocate here, my 2 yo DD has
developed a love of the bottle (would NEVER take one as a baby tho) and when
she is sick and wants to nurse constantly, I let her have one in the car as
I can't be physically near her to nurse her. This is a very RARE thing and
she doesn't drink anything but water or milk from it, but I thought I'd
throw it out there!

we live in an area w/high rates of nursing caries and UI've seen a lot
elsewhere,so this is one thing that does bug me.

It totally bugs me too. My older 2 were off of a bottle by 11 mos and 12 mos
respectively. Xander has never taken one and will not. I think it's totally
unecessary. Children beyond a year old are totally capable of drinking from
a cup. It's not at ALL the same thing as extended breastfeeding IMO. It's
very very much frowned upon where I live and most pediatricians tell mom's
to wean off a bottle by a year.

My 3 1/2 year old still uses a bottle sometimes. She's Autistic and all of
her therapists agree that its better to give it to her with water in it than
make a big deal out of removing it at this point.

I have a problem with the child being in the front seat, but I don't have
any problem with a 3 year old who still has a bottle. If we should be
allowed to extended nurse our children to 3+ years, why should other
children be allowed to comfort themselves with a bottle past 3 years?

i guess my problem is
1. baby bottles caries which is bad in this area
2. what seems to me the hypocrisy of those who frown on extended
breastfeeding but think extended bottle feeding is no big deal
In my experience, most older kids with bottles are drinking juice or
kool-aid,not a good idea.
