This is a newborn thing, the purpose is to build up your milk supply
so that she has plenty of milk as she grows older. It will begin to
resolve itself in 2 to 6 weeks. In the meantime just go with the flow.
It is a short time in your life, and it give her a good start!

~Doc said to breastfeed ONLY every 2 hours (1.5 in emergencies).

What? You mean if the baby is hungry, don't feed her more frequently?
Sorry, but that's just wrong. DS's ped said to feed him when he's

hungry,
that babies eat in clusters, going for a stretch without feeding, then
feeding frequently every hour or whatever. With both my kids, that's
exactly what happened.

I'm going to breastfeed when she shows true signs of wanting to feed.
Another thing he said was that when she cries to pick her up and give her
all the attention she needs. Hold her, play with her, sing to her....just
don't let her lay there screaming.

My concern with giving her the breast 24/7 is that she uses it to fall
asleep, then I put her down and she wakes up and wants it again. Then,

she
falls asleep and the cycle continues. I'm not sure WHY she is doing this,

It's not a problem you're having. It's your new baby getting used to being
in the outside world and boobie gives her comfort & nourishment. I ALWAYS
gave boobie first and considered other options, rocking, burping, holding
second since, at that tender young age, boobie was the cure-all 95% of the
time. It will pass :-) JME.

I hate to say this Carol Ann, but this is very normal in a very, very young
infant like yours. It doesn't last very long, fwiw. Also keep in mind that
she could be starting a little growth spurt.

Morgan had her first doctor's appointment today.

Here's the breakdown:

~The hospital miscalculated her length. Today she was 20.5" so that means
that she was NOT 19" at birth. Seems she is in the upper percentile for
height. YIPPEE!!

~She is 7.9 oz. That is up 1 oz from her birthweight.

Sounds like she's growing well.

~Doc said to breastfeed ONLY every 2 hours (1.5 in emergencies).

PLEASE disregard this little piece of "advice". Your dr. doesn't live with
your baby. You feed her exactly when *you* feel that she needs it.

Why would he say that??

~Gave a prescription for Vitamin D, but said it was up to me to decide
whether I wanted her to have it. He said it was recommended by the
Pediatric something but that he felt it was optional.

You live in the south, no? If so, the baby should be able to get adequate
sun exposure to
make sufficient Vitamin D.

~Cut nails every other day.

I think that was about it. He explained that nipple confusion would not

be
a problem since she is breastfeeding so well at this point.

Hmm, maybe. Maybe not,.

Babies require lots of contact and need to nurse very very frequently. She
does this because it
is normal newborn behavior. Inconvenient, but normal.

I just don't know if I want to be a human pacifier.

IMO there is no such thing as a "human pacifier" the pacifier is a
substitute for a human nipple
not the other way around.

This is wrong. What's an emergency, anyway?
Newborns want to suckle and nurse almost
constantly.

I'm going to breastfeed when she shows true signs of wanting to feed.
Another thing he said was that when she cries to pick her up and give her
all the attention she needs. Hold her, play with her, sing to her....just

That's good, don't let her scream. There are
lots of signs of wanting to feed, mainly the
rooting thing, sucking on hands (maybe not
yet).

My concern with giving her the breast 24/7 is that she uses it to fall
asleep, then I put her down and she wakes up and wants it again. Then, she

But... she wants and needs you to help her
feel comforted. Also, the stimulation helps
your supply. Sorry, the doctor's advice on
this BF only every 2 hour thing is really
grating on me. A newborn should be nursed
WHENEVER she wants.

plus if they stop for a few minutes is that another feed, or another
course of the same meal?

to be honest you are the one that knows your baby, I'd definitely aim for
good feeds with a break between rather than snacking, most of the time
this is what happened for us, but this has not stopped his recent snack
attack, he's 10 months and very attached to the booby.

~Cut nails every other day.

Bite them off if you can - less risk of cutting baby's fingers.

ho ho ho in a perfect world, has he every tried to cut a babies nails? I
still only cut or bite them when I can't bear the scratches any longer!

depends how dark her skin is, pigment filters it before the vitamin D
effect kicks in
