The fact that it sucks to swim in snowy, icy water? ;-) They do
something like this around here every year, as well, but I would *never*
participate.

That's what I thought...until I somehow got roped in.

I'll still pass, thanks. I've had frostbite in the past, and it would
probably flare up. That would be my excuse, since using sanity as an
excuse probably doesn't work on people like that. ;-)

Glad you enjoyed the swimming!. Isn't it great to feel so nice and
light in the water? My neighborhood has a pool, and I haven't used it
enough this summer For most of June, it was too cool here also to
swim on the weekends (not that I shoudl complain...today it's 95 with
a heat index of 105, so mother nature's definitely making up for it).

It does feel great when I go, but I hate to just go and sit there by
myself in the water--most of the nieghborhood folks hanging out htere
are either teens or parents and their teens, and I don't know most of
them (I'm an introvert, can't you tell?). DH doesn't much care for
the chlorine, so i've only talked him to going with me once. But boy
is it nice on my tummy and back to just hang out in the cool water

I don't seem to float as much as I normally would either--the baby and
all the extra fluid in my tummy is counteracting the buoyancy of the
flab that's normally there.... I do think I need some sort of
flotation thing to help out though (maybe just one of those styrofoam
"noodles" or something) to get my feet up a bit.

Just had to share... I FINALLY went swimming! We've actually been
having a much cooler summer than normal, this year. This is a Good
Thing for a pregnant woman, but it means that swimming had to be put off
for a bit. Anyway, today, we wandered around and enjoyed some local
festivities under a blazing sun. I got so unbelievably overheated that
we decided to head to my favourite swimming spot. The water was ice
cold! It was DELIGHTFUL! I only stayed in for maybe 15 minutes,
though, due to chilling out too much. ;-) I actually had a hard time
getting in, and an especially hard time dunking my head, just because
the water was so cold. The 15 minute dunk took care of my swelling,
though! All the swelling in my hands and feet went completely away.
Unfortunately, it's starting to come back in my hands, but my feet seem
OK (my hands didn't spend as much time in the water, so that might be why).

I was actually afraid to go swimming. I've been getting so unbelievably
huge that I was afraid of not being able to swim properly. Well, as it
turns out, no problem! I was also afraid that the kiddo would somehow
not like mommy being in the water. ;-) Again, no problem! (I was
afraid that my reaction to the cold water would have an affect on the
baby, but it didn't)

And now, finally, I have a tan on my back instead of just my arms. ;-)
I don't tan purposely (I'll pass on the early wrinkles and higher risk
of skin cancer, thanks), but I do at least like it when I match up when
wearing a bathing suit. I never get my legs to match my upper body,
though. They just don't get exposed enough, I guess.

Oh, and I thought I would float automatically, what with all this weight
I've gained. I figured it was all fat, which floats. NOPE. I
definitely sink. I guess I am retaining a lot of fluid.

...and probably the cutest thing of all was our little doggies, who were
forced to swim in their little doggie life jackets. ;-) I should have
taken a picture (darn! Next time!). Since there is no real shallow
part in this river (the shallowest part is right at the edge where you
get in, and the water is up to my ribs there), and since there is no
easy way for them to even get out of the water, we don't let the dogs go
in without something that floats.

Now, I have been planning on just how to introduce the baby to this
water... Next year certainly would be too young (we'll concentrate on a
kiddie pool next year). Maybe the year after that? I don't want to
freak the kid out to the point of being terrified of water for life.

Yeah, it's been warming up here, too. We had a pretty hot one today,
but I've been staying in the A/C instead of going to the water. Too
much work to do! You know - gotta clean EVERYTHING, heh heh.

I know how you feel. I'm not a serious introvert, but I *do* prefer a
quiet swim. We have two beaches right by the house, but I don't like to
go to them because they are always packed. Also, the E. Coli count
tends to often be high at them. When DH and I go up to his campus, the
place is like a ghost town. ;-) We *rarely* have to share it. Not
sure what the E. Coli count is, though (no one ever checks it there),
but I bet it's pretty low (fast flowing cool water).

Oh, and pool noodles work great. Nice and cheap, too, and they never
require air.

Oh, isn't that a nice effect? I remember when I was pregnant with my twins, in
a very very hot central Mass. summer with no air conditioning, my husband used
to take me out to stand in the lake in the evenings. (I didn't dare try to
really swim with being so bulky and all -- it might have been okay in a pool.)
For a while my feet and legs would un-swell and I wouldn't have any
contractions at all (irritable uterus).
