Default Questions about New York

My oldest daughter and her born and raised Californian B/F have decided
to take an overnight trip into the city, like fri overnight into sat
this weekend coming up. He has never been to New York, I have only been
a few times and that was many moons ago. I am wondering if anyone has
any advice on where they should stay overnight that is safe? Is there
anywhere they should avoid? Is there anywhere you recommend they visit?
Thanks in advance for any info you can offer.
Bev
