Anti-depressant pregnancy concern
"Anti-depressant pregnancy concern", BBC News, September 1, 2005,
Link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4204126.stm Use of a type of anti-depressant medication during pregnancy may increase the risk of birth defects such as cleft palate, research suggests. Danish and US scientists found use of SSRIs in the first three months of pregnancy was linked to a 40% increased risk - but the results are preliminary. Cardiac defects appeared to be 60% more likely when the women used SSRIs. But the researchers stress the results, featured in Pulse magazine, do not mean women should stop taking the drugs. The findings were presented an International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology conference. SSRIs, or Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors, include commonly prescribed drugs such as Prozac and Seroxat. They work by boosting levels of the mood chemical serotonin in the brain. Their use during pregnancy was linked to withdrawal symptoms in newborn babies in a study published in The Lancet earlier this year. And doctors have been told not to prescribe them to children because of an increased risk of suicide. Balancing risk In the latest study, focusing on 1,054 women who took SSRIs during pregnancy, scientists also found that use of the drugs late in pregnacy was associated with a 40% increased risk of premature birth. And a second study of 377 cases of persistent pulmonary hypertension in babies found SSRI use late in pregnancy was linked a 5.5-fold increased risk. Lead researcher Professor Henrik Toft Sorensen told the BBC News website that the study was still in its early stages, and it was unclear whether SSRI use caused problems, or whether some other factor, such as an unhealthy diet, might be to blame. "I do not think people should take any public health action based on this data at this stage," he said. "And people should remember that the risk is still very low." The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency issued a statement, saying: "Previous studies have shown differing results, some showing no difference in birth defects in women taking antidepressants to the average population rate. "The MHRA is carefully considering these data with European colleagues and will issue advice as necessary. "As with all medicines, antidepressants should only be taken in pregnancy if the expected benefit to the mother is thought to be greater than the risk to the foetus, and all drugs should be avoided in the first trimester if possible. "People taking antidepressants should not stop them without seeking medical advice." |

Health Canada has found that pregnant women taking anti-depressants in the
last quarter have an increased risk for babies to be born with multiple problems and must remain in the hospital. Respitory problems etc. I have been saying for so long with so little acceptance that anti-depressants and ALL stimulants, including marijuana, cocaine, depakote, xanax, buspar, natural herbs with natural stimulants, Flexeril has a stimulant, etc. etc. etc. can be disastrous for the vulnerable person or child by a mind/body connection, literally where the aura of the stimulants transmits harm from the stimulant taker to a friend, or member of family. Crohns and Ulcerative Colitis are illnesses from such a cause. Many subtle conditions can be attributed to the use of stimulants by one person and transmitted to another by a mind/body connection, ( I know I am repetitious, but it is worth repeating because it is so strange as to be almost unbelievable.) These are manmade illnesses, and develop and continue their damage in spite of distance. The two (or more) persons can be in the same roon or miles apart. The harm continues by the mind/body factor. An astute person can bear this out quickly by probing for the person on the stimulant and asking them to cease or go to Valium or Ativan, which do no harm. Not always will the person comply, so all contact and mind connection must be ceased before normalcy can be resumed. Stong medication, surgery, suffering is the alternative. Of course, we must adjust to the condition of the body to alleviate the harm by diet, or whatever the doctor prescribes. But THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR ELIMINATING THE CAUSE.while treatment is taking place. THE CORE OF THE PROBLEM ARE THE STIMULANTS. DAMN IT. (Sorry) This is coloring our entire society, so vast is the use of stimulants, mainly anti-depressants. Being unscientific and illogical make it difficult to accept as truth. Some can relate quickly and some never will, but everyone should have the opportunity to verify this for their own benefit. This will touch everyone eventually, until this becomes a known FACT. Surely it bears research, particularly with children. They are the easiest to make well, as they have few contacts that would be harmful. Usually the mother is on an anti-depressant, and ceasing the med restores the child to former health. This in no way is meant to judge anyone, it is simply an effort to make known the harm of stimulants and hope people will believe the almost unbelievable. Those that suffer this manmade plague deserve to be free of the harm that stimulants cause. Gail Michael "Roman Bystrianyk" wrote in message oups.com...
