What happens if I am pregnant and get an IUD fitted

Hi all,

I had sex this weekend and not protection (silly, I know) and I have
an appt in a week's time to get an IUD fitted. I don't believe I am
pregnant since I was having my period when I had sex (low
possibilities) but still I would like to know what would happen if I
am and get the IUD fitted. If I take a prenancy test, would it detect
such an early pregnancy?

If you're concerned, your gyn's office can do an Hgh blood test. You may
need to come in and give the blood sample in advance so they can check
before the appointment.

If you don't want to be pregnant, shift the appointment up and get the
IUD fitted sooner. They can be used as a form of post-coital birth
control, or at least the hormonal Mirena style are. Otherwise you are
out of luck discovering a pregnancy until at least 2 weeks after
having unprotected sex assuming that you were fertile at the time.

If you are pregnant and the IUD is fitted there is a good chance it
will cause an abortion but no guarantee. Anyone who discovers they
are pregnant with an IUD fitted is usually told that there is a risk
either way, whether they have it removed which can take the baby with
it or if they leave it in which can cause a miscarriage anyway.

Generally they schedule IUD insertion during or just after your period to avoid
this issue. SInce you were having your period at the time, unless you have
VERY long bleeds and VERY short cycles, the odds that you would have conceived
would seem pretty remote.
But if you're worried, by all means reschedule. (Doing a pregnancy test
wouldn't help, since it would be too soon to be accurate.)
