Would an ectopic pregnancy show up on a pregnancy test like a normal
pregnancy test?

Yes, I think so usually.
Debbie
Ps do I take it you've managed to give up smoking from your new name? If so,
Well done. I'm told it is really hard to do. I'm sure I wouldn't manage it
on my willpower

Hi

Okay may do a PG test later then although I'm sure i'm not pregnant because
I've not had unprotected sex and hubby swears that the smognog (comdom) was
fine but things happen. I've been suffering from shoulder pain but obviously
I didnt connect that to pregnancy but I'm now getting a dull constant pain
in my left hand side when I'm standing up mostly, I've also been feeling
sick on and off, not had any spotting since March. The pain and shoulder
pain were symptoms of EP when I looked it up although im 99% sure i've not
got that either.

I quit smoking three months ago and yes it's not easy but I really wanted to
do it and with the smoking ban that made it easier.

Three months, 4 hours, 14 minutes and 25 seconds. 1783 cigarettes not
smoked, saving £401.11. Life saved: 6 days, 4 hours, 35 minutes.

I get a dull pain when I'm ovulating. I got it worst between #1 and #2.
Never had it before I was pregnant the first time, and only got milkd pain
after #2. I tell dh that if I get it badly after #3 then I'll have to try
for #4 to see if it stops again (and then maybe #5 if it doesn't work the
first time...)

Well done! I'd forgotten you were in Wales. I wish smoking at bus stops was
banned now. It's really hard waitng for the bus with the children and trying
to keep out of the smoke.

Make sure some of the money is spent on you and what you want. You deserve
it!

Usually yes, there is enough hormone to make the test at least faintly
positive.

I've had two ectopics and had positive tests with both. I didn't have
shoulder pain or any cramping really -- my only symptom with both was
spotting/light bleeding along with positive pg tests and then non-
doubling betas.

Good luck, I hope it's not an ectopic pregnancy they are very
unpleasant.

it can and it can't, the hormone levels tend to be lower, so sometimes only
show up on blood tests. Usually by the time it is symptomatic it would show
on a urine test.

shoulder pain would be sharp for an ectopic pregnancy as it's caused by free
blood irritating the diaphragm, plus, if you've been sick/absent period
since march, if you were pregnant, you would likely be further on than the
time an ectopic pregnancy becomes symptomatic. You would also be unlikely to
feel nauseous - I think this is one reason why ectopic pregnancy is so
dangerous, women with it seem less likely to know that they are pregnant, so
are not watching for symptoms.

That's good news, but do watch yourself, I think it is very very unlikely
that you would have an EP, but if you experience severe abdominal pain, or
the shoulder pain gets exceedingly bad, do get checked out.

hang on, I'm sure you're recalling correctly that your betas didn't double,
but I'm not sure it's entirely clear cut as to whether they should be or
not, look here http://www.aafp.org/afp/20000215/1080.html and scroll down to
the flow chart, I think the 2nd row down has an incorrect label and the
right side should be unstable, but not stable, but if you follow it down,
both doubling and non doubling betas can lead to a conclusion of an ectopic
pregnancy - though of course with doubling betas there is still the chance
it's a viable pregnancy, with non doubling, it's going to end, other than in
rare cases, where one of multiples was miscarried (or they gave you the
wrong results - this happened to a friend of mine who was being monitored
following an ectopic pregnancy - in the end, she said she felt she was
better off, another women receiving her results could have been in a
dangerous situation).
