Controlled Crying - Only at night?

If you have made the decision to proceed with controlled crying (and I
don't really want to get into a debate on the ethics of it), do you
only do it at night, or do you do it for each regular nap during the
day as well?

We only used it during the day, never needed it at night. It worked well, we
went from having a grizzly unhappy little boy to a placid and very
inquisitive one.

We used it only at night because DS would just fall to sleep after lunch, no
problem, but at night, he was related to owls! After about a week of his
expressions of dissatisfaction with the arrangements he became more willing
to amuse himself in the crib with his toys, if not go directly to sleep.

What is controlled crying - the same as crying it out?



In our case it meant not getting baby out of the cot but returning to the
room evey few minutes to comfort and calm them and then leaving again,
repeated until baby falls asleep. There are loads of different "methods" but
I gather the differnece between between controlled crying and crying it out
is that with crying it out you just leave the baby until he or she falls
asleep. Wheras with controlled crying you keep returning to the child to
reassure. The end goal being that the child learns that Mum Dad or whoever
will always come but won't get baby up until he/she has had a sleep. The
difference between the methods is pretty much how long you leave the baby
before going in.

Oh gotcha. Thanks for explaining, I thought it was all the same. We did
controlled crying (who knew!) with our first but only for bed time. I
figured if they cried they didn't want to nap so I'd just go get them and
try a nap later.

IMO, you do not do it at all without reading the book by Dr. Ferber entitled
Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems. There is more to success than just
crying.
