Default Periods after baby?

Just a question...

DD2 is not quite 10 weeks old now. Wow, time flies, it seems!
IIRC, with DS (almost 6), I didn't start periods again until looong after he
was born. I did, however, exclusively bf him until he was about 6 months
old. At that point, I did offer him EBM in a bottle on occasion (I believe
only a handful of times, at most, like when I went camping with some friends
for 2 days and left him with my mom and was obviously unavailable to nurse)
He was then moved to a sippy cup around 7ish months old, with cups of EBM
during the day and nursing at night and in the morning. I *think* he was
around 12 months old when I started getting periods again, and he kind of
weaned himself from morning/night feedings around 17-18ish months.

With DD1 (now 17 months), I nursed her exclusively for about 5ish months.
She started to lose weight (she slept 6-8 hours at least during the night
since day 1, 8-10 hours at night from about 6 weeks and was sleeping 12
hours through the night by 3 months. Perscriptions and pumping did not
bring supply up and long story short, we put her on a bottle with formula
around 5 months when her lack of weight gain became a concern and she was
constantly hungry. IIRC, by the time she was about 5 months I first got my
period, and right after she turned 6 months, we found out we were expecting
DD2, who is almost 10 weeks.

The other day DH and I were at my aunt and uncle's house and we spent about
an hour, hour and a half scraping the massive snow and ice buildup on their
sidewalks and driveway. There was a good 4-5 inches of ice that we chipped
off together. That night I noticed that the dreadful period showed up, and
I'm wondering if this is normal. I have heard that if you exclusively bf,
normally that period doesn't happen. I have given DD2 the odd bottle of EBM
every now and then. Basically the same idea as with DS, only a bit earlier,
but about as often. With DS, it didn't come back until he was about a year
or so old, but DD2 is almost 10 weeks.
I find that I'm bleeding quite a bit. It seems to be fairly red in color
and there's LOTS. I mean, I soak through an overnight, extra long,
heavy-duty pad in about 2 hours. (Sorry if that's TMI!) I find I'm
changing pads ALL the time. I have to often make a special trip to the
washroom to change even when I don't have to pee, although I do remember
that before, a pad would last a good 6 or so hours. I used to find that the
bleeding would slow down at night and be a bit heavier during the day when
I'm more active. At night I still seem to have a mess to deal with first
thing in the morning.

Is this normal? Is this just the lovely time of the month coming back or
could I have done something by doing the sidewalks for my aunt and uncle
that same day? By 10 weeks has a body healed well enough to not have some
sort of bleeding problems? I feel no cramping, I'm definitely NOT pg again.
I'm not on any form of birth control other than condoms, although the sex
has definitely not been every night or every few nights... It's been more
like once a week for the past 3-4 weeks or so. I have a perscription for a
breastfeeding-safe pill, but I've yet to fill it. I plan to fill it
tomorrow and start at that point.

Is this bleeding expected? It just seems like a lot, and it's been since
late Thursday night, after I spent the very early evening doing those
sidewalks. Am I worrying over nothing and it's just a coincidence that it
came earlier than any other time AND right after I spent a couple hours
doing something fairly physical? (heaving heavy ice chunks over a high pile
of snow, pushing huge ice chunks across the driveway, chipping the ice away,
etc.)

Any ideas? Or even just some words that this is all normal, fine and dandy
would be appreciated, if it is normal!

It sounds to me as though you overdid it with the snow and it is still
lochia. I bled for a long time.

Did the jaundice go away with your little one? Did you go to a check up with
the doctor and how did it go?

I'm not sure if it's lochia or a menstrual period,
but exclusively breastfeeding is not a guarantee
that the period will not return for a long time.
It still varies by women, and the anecdotal times
I've read range from returning almost immediately
to a year or more. It is very individual.

I would advise you not to engage in too much
strenuous activity, though. You are barely three
months postpartum; relax a bit.

it is possible it's still related to the birth, you won't know until next
month!

regarding breastfeeding safe pills, there is a difference between safe and a
good idea, I suspect the combined pill is safe, in that nothing goes through
to the milk that would be bad for baby, but it is known to reduce supply.
The best choice of pill is the progesterone only, or mini pill, you need to
take it within a 3hr window each day and it may supress your periods.

With DS, I remember I bled for quite some time. With DD1, it stopped by the
time she was 10 days old. This time with DD2, I believe it was about 2-3
weeks. She's 10 weeks old now, so if I did overdo it, at least it seems to
have stopped. Someone said below that I'll probably just have to wait until
next month!

It did go away, right around 6ish weeks or so, which is what my ped had
said. She was doing fine, just fairly yellow. She's nice and pink now, not
at all yellow!

Well, whatever it was, it seems to have stopped now, and it seems to have
just up and stopped as fast as it seem to have come. There wasn't a day or
two of slowing down or anything, as I recall what happens with me for
regular periods.
It's rare that I actually do much that is fairly physical. The majority of
the time, as far as doing something maybe strenuous goes, would be something
like carrying DD1 around, lots of walking, carrying full laundry baskets up
and down or shoveling our own sidewalks, which isn't much to do and isn't
heavy snow as I've always kept them clear. It's just the odd times that it
snows that I'm out doing it.
