Woman Caring For Child In Feces, Dead Animals, Given Probation

Registered Nurse Allowed To Keep Custody Of Mentally Handicapped Girl
POSTED: 9:32 a.m. MDT June 23, 2003
DENVER -- A woman who was caring for a 14-year-old mentally handicapped
girl in a house filled with dog and cat feces, dead animals and junk piled
to the ceiling has been sentenced to two years of probation. Mary

Flanagan,
50, a registered nurse, will keep custody of the girl. But a judge last
week ordered Flanagan to undergo counseling, agree to home inspections and
not have pets.

Can she take up taxidermy?

She pleaded guilty in May to misdemeanor charges of child
abuse and animal cruelty.

How can you be cruel to a dead animal?

She also received a one-year deferred judgment on
the child abuse charge. It will be dropped from her record if she obeys

the
terms of probation. Firefighters donned air tanks because of the stench
when they entered Flanagan's home Jan. 26. A process server had noticed

the
mess and contacted authorities. Inspectors found the girl, whose name has
not been released, watching TV in a living area near nine dead dogs and a
cat. The girl was taken from the home, hospitalized for observation and
placed in foster care. She was returned to Flanagan shortly after the

house
was cleaned. Denver County Judge Doris Burd said the filthy living
conditions were an aberration.

What insight!

"You had suffered some depression, you were
leading somewhat of an isolated life and the challenges you face with the
child may have led to the depression and other issues you are facing," she
told Flanagan. Prosecutor Diane Balkin said the girl was not expected to
walk or talk or communicate but has improved under Flanagan's care.

Improved?

In what way?

God help the child!

How could she possibly let anyone know what's going on if the "abberations"
start again?????

The
girl has been disabled since birth and Flanagan had been her legal

guardian
for 10 years. Defense attorney James Zobel said Flanagan spends three or
four hours a day working with the girl, who does not speak.

The judge, the prosecutor and the defense attny should all be ashamed of
themselves.

Get this child OUT of there!!!!
