Default nursing at night

My baby will be 4 weeks on Sunday. She is a good little nurser except for
the past few nights.

She is very frantic about trying to latch on and kicks her legs and hits me
with her arms. She is not getting a good latch and then cries and cries.
Its almost like she gets too much saliva on my nipple and its bending in her
mouth and she cant hold on. My breasts are not engorged so she should be
able to latch and there is plenty of milk. Finally tonight I pumped her a
bottle and she drank 4 ounces in a few minutes. Has anyone else had a
problem like this. Its only at night by 6am she is back to her normal
nursing self. This is driving me nuts.

i had the same problem at first with cayden...during the dayhe was great
at night he got so hungry he was extremely exicted when it was time to
nurse...i tried differnt things and i found the best thing was to
swaddle him so that he couldnt move his arms and legs, latch him, let me
milk let down and then unswaddle him...thta way he could still move but
he was so into eating by that time he wasnt so exicted....hope this
works for you

Overactive letdown?
gas?
I suspect the former with perhaps the latter as an additional compliction.
I have a pretty forceful letdown, so I am always having to take the baby off
for a minute so milk doesnt shoot up into her sinuses.

The Moo boy squiggled if it was dark, I know you are supposed to keep
the lights low but he latched much better at night at that age ish if
he could see where he was going.

thank you all for responding. I will try to nurse her swaddled and in the
light tonight. I think she may be having a growth spurt because she has
been nursing all day long. At one point she nursed for 4 hours and is
asking to nurse every 20 minutes or so. I guess my supply just needs to keep
up :0)

When my Jessi was that young I did used to wipe off my nipple for her
to relatch if she came off. It did seem to be easier for her to latch
if the nipple was dry.

At that age, YoungBloke couldn't get himself latched on at night
unless I had the light on and if I put the light on and latched him on
he would fall off the breast as soon as I put the light off. We spent
about a week with one bedside light on all night and we had the latch
mostly sorted. Try different positions, too, in case that's what her
problem is with staying on. At 12wks YB still has problems staying on
the breast if he's not at exactly the right level when we're lying
down but is better at finding the nipple again without too much help.

Try shaping your breast for her and keeping your fingers there until she
stays on the breast. If it's all wet and slippery, the breast can slip out
of her mouth before she gets a good suction grip on it.
