Default Fascinating article on normal breastfeeding

From the conclusion:

Healthy, exclusively breastfed 1- to 6-month-old infants consume 0 to 240 g of
milk between 6 and 18 times during 24 hours, with 64% of infants breastfeeding
1 to 3 times at night. The right breast usually produces significantly more
milk than the left, and the volume of milk consumed at each breastfeeding is
related to the volume of milk available in the breast and the time of day. The
fat content of breast milk varies between mothers (22.3*61.6 g/L) and within
and between breastfeedings, but the amount of fat consumed by the infant is
independent of the frequency of breastfeeding.

One of the researchers is *that* Peter Hartmann, and the ABA recruited the
volunteers. It's nice to find out that the AVERAGE number of breastfeeds in
24 hours is 11! That "6-12 times a day" never sounded right to me.

The 11 "breastfeedings" is defining one side as one breastfeeding. There
were 4-13 "meals" per day (average 7.9). From the paper: "A meal was
defined as an unpaired breastfeeding, or 2 paired breastfeedings, or 3
clustered breastfeedings."

Well, my babies generally only feed from one breast per meal!

Note, however, that about half all the meals *were* from one side only. And
that's interesting in itself; there is a lot of stuff out there which implies
that feeding from both breasts at a feed is typical.

How very interesting. I read over it very quickly as all the kids were up
and I have to convert the grams, lol. It validated a lot of things that a
breastfeeding mom (or at least this one!) feels/thinks though, which is
great!
