Default Another Hale's q., sorry

OK, I just got off the phone with the nurse in my gastro's office.

She told me very curtly that due to the sedation during the procedure (Demerol
& Versed) that I would be unable to nurse for 24 hours.

I told her equally curtly that nursing was a priority, that I wasn't nursing a
small infant, and that AFAIK those meds were not going to hurt my 2-yr-old
nursling.

Could somebody please double-check Demerol and Versed for me in Hales's? I
can't think why either would be a problem. Demerol is often given in labor,
for pete's sake, and isn't Versed just the IV version of Valium?

Honestly I am more worried about getting dehydrated than I am about the meds.
I am not supposed to have anything at all from midnight before the procedure,
and between that and the clean-out, there's going to be a whole lot of water
going out and none going in.

Margaret is nowhere near ready to wean, nor am I ready to wean her, and life
around here would be pretty miserable if I am denying her "side" for a full
day. I would have to go check into a motel, I think--she's OK with not nursing
when I'm not around.

Demerol: L2 (L3 if used early postpartum. Ped concerns Sedation, poor
sucking reflex neurobehavioral delay. Also approved by the AAP for bf'ing
mothers.

Versed: L3. Wait 4 hours after dose to nurse. No reported pediatric
concerns. It says that Midazolam (generic name) & its hydroxymetabolite
were undetectable 4 hrs after administration. Therefore the amount of drug
transferred to an infant via early milk is minimal particularly if the baby
is nursed more than 4 hrs after administration.

Sorry, must dash...

Hi,

No Hale's ref. here, but I asked a similar question before general
anesthesia with Versed, Brevitol and some kind of barbiturate. The nurse
and anesthesiologist told me to bottle-feed from my EBM stash for 48 hours,
so naturally I breastfed him within two hours of waking up ;-) He was
almost 7 months old at the time and showed no sedation or ill effects.

Yes, Versed is a benzodiazepine. FWIW I took a one-time 15-mg. dose of
Valium before visiting the dentist and DS showed no sedation at all, at age
8 months. (But you wouldn't want to take it chronically as a baby's liver
has trouble clearing it out efficiently).

Beth
