Baby's head moves during breastfeeding
Dear all,
I am a new mother with a baby of 2 weeks old, and have a couple of questions that I am hoping anybody can help me with. I have noticed in the last 3 days or so,during breastfeeding my baby's head moves all the time which resulted my nipple that is still on his mouth to hurt so badly because of the movement. His whole body also arches backwards. The baby is ok at the beginning of the breastfeeding, only after a while he does this movement. He is usually happy after 10-30 minutes of breastfeeding. I usually hold him close in my arms, his belly and mine touch, and i always make sure I am in a comfortable position so that I can hold him right and breasfeed well. I also alternate position by breasfeeding him while lying down. Before we didn't have any problem, and if anybody can give us tips or maybe point out something that I do wrong, I would be very grateful. I tend to listen to some classical music while breastfeeding. Would it be harmful for the baby to listen to constant music or noise all the time? Because I sometime run the music in the background for a long period of time, even when the baby is already fall asleep. Thank you in advance for all the inputs! |

Do you know whether he is doing this before you have a letdown or after? If he has been nursing for a bit, but hasn't had a letdown yet, he could be trying to hurry it along with his whole body (not knowing how bad it is for you). If this begins just after you have a forceful letdown, it could be how he is reacting to milk coming too quickly for him to handle. In this case, you could try latching him off briefly, catching spraying milk with a burp diaper, then latching him back on. Some babies do this when they need to poop. If this is the case, you could try latching him off and moving him into a semi-sitting position resting back against you facing away supporting his thighs. After pooping he is more likely to be able to nurse calmly. It sounds like you are managing this nicely. When I had my first, no one told me not to hold my hand cupped at the back of her head. The tighter I pulled her in, the harder she latched on and the harder she arched back and pushed away with her amazingly strong little arms. Later I learned to support the baby's head by resting her neck on the palm of my hand with my thumb and fingers at the base of the head just below the ears. This can also work in the sidelying position. With a baby who arches suddenly, it gives you the control to react and deal with it, without inducing more arching. Touching the feet can also induce arching. I tend to listen to some classical music while breastfeeding. Would it be harmful for the baby to listen to constant music or noise all the time? Because I sometime run the music in the background for a long period of time, even when the baby is already fall asleep. Generally, classical music is good for a baby. I have heard that constant music may be too much to be healthy. Most new babies can nurse fine with classical music and various background noises. If your baby is particularly sensitive, you may want to pay attention to see if this is a problem. --Betsy |
