The study looked at 81 employees. These employees were high-level employees (senior managers). The rank-and-file employees were not included in the survey. I find it rather disturbing that of the 81 senior employees, 44 (about 1/2) had not done the documentation required of them. It certains adds to questions about conflicts of interest of these and other researchers at NIH. However, I am glad that Dr. Zerhouni is taking a look at this and dealing with the issue. This has been covered in _Science_ magazine over the last several months (I am sure that this latest study will be covered in the next two weeks or so, as well). Jeff get a life/heart and start helping the children in your country. I am. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I don't see any cover-up by pharma. I do see really bad behavior by about 1/2 the senior employees at NIH and a failure of NIH to police its ranks. I really doubt that the pharm companies were directing their consultants in the NIH to do this. I am not suggesting that in any way the NIH folks are excused for this. I would also like to point out that one of the people who has been spear-heading the effort to get full disclosure of this and to have appropriate limits on outside activities by NIH official is Dr. Zerhouni, the NIH director.
